Job Description:
A DSC Senior Optical Engineer is highly motivated and ready to contribute to the state-of-the-art technology of our 3D biometrics systems. The successful candidate will design, build and test optical sub-assemblies which are the heart of DSC’s IR imaging laser radar (LIDAR) and video system and provide manufacturing-related expertise to our mechanical and production teams. Other responsibilities include specifying optical and opto-mechanical system performance parameters, and design and develop system tests to ensure proper operation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include: *
  • Contribute to the definition of performance requirements and selection of suitable implementation approaches for optical subsystems *
  • Design, build and test optical subsystems in the visible and IR spectral ranges *
  • Work with the engineering team to invent novel imaging architectures and systems *
  • Work with leading-edge optical subsystem manufacturers to design and test components and subsystems *
  • Hands-on work with optical assemblies and custom test equipment to perform test and calibration *
  • Provide technical leadership to a team of technicians performing a wide variety of optical, electronic or electro-optical assembly operations *
  • Interface with various experts in manufacturing for DFx-related activities *
  • Work with optical, mechanical and electrical engineers to create prototype optical assemblies *
  • Participate in the generation and review of assembly, alignment and test procedures *
  • Support the design, integration and maintenance of test fixtures *
  • Help train manufacturing personnel to perform operations and operate equipment.

Minimum Qualifications: *
  • BS in physics, optics or related field is required with significant optics experience and/or concentration required. *
  • Must have experience working in a laboratory and production environment. *
  • At least 10 years hands-on experience in designing and building optical, opto-mechanical and opto-electronic systems, including hands-on experience with optical components and optical components design. *
  • Familiarity with imaging systems, architectures, technologies, and designs. *
  • Familiarity with optical design tools such as ZEMAX. *
  • Experience with visible and IR systems design. *
  • High level of manual dexterity and the ability to make very fine adjustments to optical apparatus. Attention to detail.

Desired Qualifications: *
  • MS in Physics *
  • Understanding of integrated optics. *
  • Ability to obtain a security clearance by the U.S. Government if required.

Physical Requirements: *
  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. *
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision to regularly work with microscopes. *
  • Manual dexterity required to regularly work with small hand tools. *
  • Ability to work in a warehouse environment (standing work, perform physical tasks in hot/cold temperatures)

  • Individual’s primary workstation is located in the manufacturing/lab area. *
  • The noise level in this environment ranges from low to moderate
