Genomatica’s Molecular Biology group is seeking an experienced, highly motivated Senior Research Associate with significant cutting edge Molecular Biology experience. The successful candidate will join and support an interdisciplinary group of biologists dedicated to designing, discovering and optimizing novel of biochemical pathways. The group is involved in a milestone driven, proof of concept project with a goal of validating target genes that will ultimately convert renewable feedstock into commodity chemicals. Strong technical, creative, organizational and communication skills are essential to the success of the team. This is a temporary position. The person and position will be evaluated at 6 months. At that point Genomatica will assess its needs to determine whether to continue the position.

• Conducting molecular biology experiments, including molecular cloning (DNA and RNA isolation, PCR, DNA mutagenesis, in vitro gene synthesis, RT-PCR and Protein expression analysis)
• Continuous documentation, analysis and interpretation of experiments in the form of laboratory notebooks as well as timely entry of information into a LIMS database. Presentation of analyzed and summarized results in both written and oral format and delivery of completed reports.
• Work independently on assigned tasks as well as collaboratively with other team members to accomplish project goals and milestones.

• Degree in bioengineering, molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or equivalent
• BS or MS with at least 7+ years post-graduate experience, preferably in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry
• Strong and proven expertise in molecular biology; DNA cloning, vector construction, PCR, sequencing
• Demonstrated proficiency in recombinant protein expression (bacteria/yeast) as well as with enzyme assays.
• Experience with commercial molecular biology software is required (Vector NTI, Geneious, Sequencher, etc.)
• Previous demonstration of independence in experimental design and problem-solving, as well as demonstrated teamwork skills
• Experience in bioinformatics related to systems biology and bio-engineering is highly desired.
• Familiarity with strain construction, metabolic engineering, will be beneficial for the role.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

• Demonstrated attention to detail. Well organized and methodical, yet flexible to changing priorities
• Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks simultaneously either in structured or non-structured work environment
• Be highly motivated and flexible; able to work additional hours or weekends if required

This position involves working primarily in a laboratory setting. As such this position requires the ability to stand or sit at the bench, the use of standard laboratory equipment for protein purification and enzyme characterization as well as computers and office equipment. The position requires communication with other individuals through a variety of methods. There are no specific lifting requirements.
