GL Garrad Hassan North America is looking to recruit a Senior Scientist for the Forecasting Group responsible for assisting the Forecasting team with the delivery of accurate and reliable predictions of short-term solar power generation to a variety of end users in the power sector, to manage and help administer an in-house version of the operational WRF mesoscale model on a multi-node Linux cluster, and to develop and maintain a global solar irradiance data service. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Forecast service setup and maintenance; Ongoing forecast service evaluation; Monitoring and administration of an operational WRF model and general Linux cluster administration; Research, development, testing, and deployment of statistical and/or mesoscale modeling techniques for forecast improvement; Data assimilation using WRF and generation of ensemble forecasts; Radiative transfer model design, testing, and use on distributed computing resource; Liaise with internal IT support as well as collocation facility personnel. Carrying out fundamental research in solar resource characterization for short-term forecasting and long-term prediction and prospecting; Represent GL GH in industry workshop and conference presentations; Communications and site meetings with clients. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Project management responsibilities of assigned projects or services from initial plan, setup, and implementation.

Occasional reports may be expected. The scientist will maintain a primary project management responsibility in development and delivery of a global solar irradiance dataset and its derivative products. TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS: Comprehensive understanding of radiative transfer science, cloud development and prediction; Familiarity with convection parameterization and large-scale stratiform cloud parameterization within numerical weather prediction and/or climate models; Aptitude in working with the statistical analysis of data, Comprehensive understanding of large-scale numerical weather prediction models and demonstrated consumption of their data; 3 years experience running the WRF mesoscale model, preferably for short-term forecasting Aptitude for working with the statistical analysis of data and gridded atmospheric datasets, including netCDF, GRIB, GRIB2, and HDF formats, At least 3 years experience with Matlab or IDL; knowledge of R a plus At least 2 years experience with UNIX shell scripting; Proficiency in Windows and Linux operating systems, Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, Understanding of solar energy industry measurement techniques and standards, Comprehensive understanding of solar energy technology FUNDAMENTAL QUALIFICATIONS: Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, Ability to manage multiple projects at a time and adapt to rapidly shifting priorities, Ability to write technical reports and commercial correspondence, Ability to present technical information clearly and concisely, Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary geographically disperse team. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Ph.D.

in atmospheric science, meteorology, physics, or engineering; An M.S. in atmospheric science, meteorology, physics, or engineering with equivalent industry experience will be considered.
