Reports to Chief Technologist and is responsible for day to day management and execution of research projects conducted in Company's plant molecular biology laboratory. The Senior Scientist is expected to initiate and advance critical aspects of the Company's research program through effective staff supervision and individual efforts. The position will manage and have oversight of molecular biology lab operations including DNA extraction, HTP genotyping, library construction and NGS sequencing pipelines in order to ensure smooth functioning and the team's timely ability to meet objectives, milestones while remaining within budget.
Supervise plant molecular breeding team members and bridge objectives with management by providing staff with daily support and scientific direction. Interface with scientific management team in order to maximize lab productivity and assure the research has a direct impact on product development and increasing shareholder value
Work with management to develop robust big data systems for marker accelerated selection including developing a SNP discovery pipeline, initiating trait association studies and other methods designed to accelerate SG Biofuels Jatropha breeding program.
Conceive, plan, design and execute research experiments and projects in order to advance the molecular biology research program and increase enterprise value and capture intellectually property. Routinely propose next steps in the project, new avenues of pursuit and required resources.
Critically review experimental design, data and results generated by lab scientists and associates; assist team members with data interpretation and provide insight toward strategies to overcome scientific obstacles
Prepare, review and edit technical reports, quantitative analyses, protocols, scientific presentations and other on-going documentation and summaries of findings. Present data at internal meetings and external scientific conferences and meetings.
Critically review daily, weekly, monthly and yearly progress of lab associates and scientists; provide recommendations to management for team members' improvement and paths toward advancement. Identify missing core competencies in JLab and assist management with recruitment of new staff members.
Assist scientific management to assure that JLab research is coordinated with and supports Guatemalan breeding efforts.
Maintain an in-depth knowledge of the applicable scientific arena and routinely educate peers and others on that information.
Develop and/or participate in the development of research grants and/or patent applications.
May perform other related duties as required and/or assigned.
Must be available and willing to work flexible schedule including periodic travel.
EDUCATION & REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
Requires a Ph.D. degree in a plant molecular biology or related field
Requires 7-10 years' hands on laboratory experience, 5 years management experience preferably in plant biotechnology or human genetics
Experience in supervision of professional level employees
Prior experience in a fast paced, start-up environment strongly preferred.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
Understanding and preferably recent experience with running Ion Proton DNA sequencing pipeline
Strong scientific background with working knowledge of bioinformatics, plant genomics and molecular biology.
Demonstrated success in technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaborations with others and independent thought required.
Strong presentation and verbal and written communication skills
Strong organization skills and proven ability to manage details.
Ability to influence and motivate others to support company efforts.
Ability to multi-task and deliver on projects and assignments within tight timeframes and budgets.
