The Southern Poverty Law Center is seeking a Miami-based senior staff attorney to litigate children’s civil rights cases related to juvenile justice and education reform throughout the South. |
The Southern Poverty Law Center works to reduce the imprisonment of children of color by advocating for juvenile justice and educational reforms. SPLC works to end discriminatory practices that limit educational opportunities and exclude students from public schools; to reduce the arrest and over-incarceration of children; and to ensure that children in the juvenile justice system are treated fairly and humanely. To these ends, we use a variety of strategies—including community engagement and mobilization, legislative and media advocacy, and litigation.
Responsibilities of Position:
We are currently seeking an experienced and dedicated attorney to work collaboratively with our staff on multiple initiatives.
Responsibilities of the position include:
Litigating juvenile justice and education cases in federal district court, including complex civil rights and other class actions, and before state and federal agencies;
Supervising the legal work of staff attorneys engaged in litigation;
Developing new cases and strategies that are responsive to needs and strengths of families and youth;
Communicating regularly with SPLC staff across the southern region about the litigation docket; and
Representing SPLC in various forums, including before community groups, legislators and state agencies.
