A Non-Merit vacancy exists in the Network Services Unit of the Office of Information Technology.

Non-Merit positions are not classified within the Baltimore County Government Classification and Compensation Plan.

Examples of Duties:
Under general supervision, and as part of a team provides support and problem resolution for enterprise data centers with over 500 servers and serving more than 5000 users. Designs, implements and supports the enterprise infrastructure. Leads projects to improve business processes through technology tools. Meets with other business groups to understand and capture requirements.
Ensures the health of computing systems and infrastructure by performing the following actions:

  • Defines system health metrics to monitor and sets up alerts when defined thresholds are exceeded.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and patching as required of all systems. Manages systems to be in supportable configurations (e.g. versions, warranties, patch-levels, support contracts), and plans appropriate upgrades as needed.
  • Troubleshoots, and resolves: In the event of an issue, performs the necessary analysis and troubleshooting to address and resolve the issue.
  • Creates documentation describing configurations, architecture, management processes, etc.
  • Manages VMware environment and ensures that all pieces of the infrastructure meet the needs of our fast-paced business.

AA degree from an accredited college or university in information technology, computer science, computer engineering or a related field;


At least seven (7) years' experience in a multi-platform/vendor networking environment, including extensive hands on experience with VMWare, Microsoft Windows Server 2003/2008, Microsoft Windows Server Clustering, SAN Storage, Citrix and other platforms.

Additional relevant experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

If substituting experience for education, your application must demonstrate appropriate relevant experience in order to meet the required qualifications.

Experience should include the following:
Experience designing and implementing virtualization architectures, with a focus in VMware solutions. At least 7 years of experience with VMware, Citrix, and/or Microsoft products and technologies (preferably in an Enterprise environment), network administration, design, or troubleshooting. Hands on experience with Xenserer, vSphere, and Hyper-V. Creating datacenter solutions to solve business challenges. Interfacing with customers and translating their requirements into designs and solutions. HP p and c Class blade hardware, C7000 series chassis, Virtual Connects. Work well in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in information technology, computer science, computer engineering. Experience working with Citrix XenServer and Micro Hyper-V. Microsoft MCSE Windows Server 2003 or higher certification. VMWare certification - VCP

Conditions of Employment:
This position works an average scheduled workweek of 34 hours, Monday through Friday. May occasionally require additional hours including weekends, evenings and holidays. 24 x 7 on call required for production problems.

Physical and Environmental Conditions
The work of this classification is essentially sedentary, but does require periods of heavy (up to 50 lbs) lifting, and involves the use of computers and office machinery.
