Position Summary:
Systems Infrastructure is a small team within Pixar’s Systems department that ensures robust performance of the core services utilized by the entire studio. We make sure there is sufficient server, network and data center capacity to react to changes in demand for compute, bandwidth, or power caused by events such as a shift in film production schedule, a render or storage farm expansion, or new work-flows.

The Senior UNIX System Administrator (Server/Network) works closely with server and network technical leads to help support and implement the systems infrastructure required by the studio. This position requires close collaboration with our technical staff, software engineers, and film production users in an effort to best align technical solutions with the schedules and creative needs of various studio productions. Services we manage directly include virtualization hypervisors, dhcp, dns, ldap, email, calendar, databases, firewall, load balancers, VPN and LAN / WLAN / WAN networks. This position is perfect for an experienced sys admin who has worn many hats, and likes the fit of them all.

  • Work under the guidance of the technical leads to implement, support, and secure network and server infrastructure as required by the studio
  • Provide technical leadership for, and participate in major systems' projects
  • Install and maintain physical and virtual servers and network hardware
  • Diagnose server and network related performance issues, and perform root-cause analysis
  • Monitor and analyze availability and capacity of networks, servers, and data centers
  • Perform general system configuration, maintenance, and optimization of server and network infrastructure
  • Serve as escalation point for end-user support within our cross-platform environment including Linux, Mac OS X, Windows
  • Produce documentation for administrators and end-users
  • Assist other Systems staff as required
  • Minimum of 5 years in an IS/IT support position
  • Highly skilled in areas of Linux system administration and TCP/IP networking with a strong understanding of the OSI model
  • Experience with network service troubleshooting and configuration; DNS, DHCP, NFS, HTTP, IMAP, LDAP, RADIUS, SMTP
  • Experience with Linux troubleshooting and tuning utilities
  • Experience with RedHat software packaging and provisioning; RPM, kickstart
  • Experience with virtualization; KVM, Virtuozzo, VMware
  • Experience with network operating systems; Arista EOS, ArubaOS, Cisco IOS, F5
  • Familiarity with wireless and virtual private networking
  • Familiarity with RDBMS administration; MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL
  • Familiarity with Mac OS X and Windows
  • Ability and drive to accomplish redundant tasks by scripting; python, sh, Ruby, C
  • Self-motivated with a strong desire to learn and stay abreast of industry developments and standards
  • Ability to prioritize, respond, and follow through on multiple (often simultaneous) requests in a dynamic work environment
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, including the ability to effectively communicate highly-technical concepts in lay-person's terms
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation
  • Ability to work during evenings and weekends as required
Physical Factors:
  • Ability to lift and manipulate objects weighing up to 50lbs
  • Ability to work with arms and hands overhead for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work in confined spaces (e.g. in and around server racks, utility vaults, etc.)
