The University of Oregon, a distinguished public research university in Eugene, Oregon, invites nominations and applications for an innovative academic leader to serve as Senior Vice President and Provost. This position reports directly to the President and requires a talented administrator capable of leading the University into a new era of growth and self-sufficiency built upon excellence in research, scholarship, and teaching.
The University of Oregon (UO) is the flagship institution of the Oregon University System, a network of seven public universities across the state. Located just over an hour from the Pacific Ocean and the Cascade Mountains, and two hours from the city of Portland, the university currently enrolls almost 25,000 students, including 21,000 undergraduates and 4,000 graduates. It is one of 62 member institutions of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU), offers nearly 300 comprehensive academic programs, and is home to more than 25 research centers and institutes.
This is a momentous time in the 140 year history of the university; the past year has seen a new President, Dr. Michael Gottfredson, take office and Oregon state legislators approve a bill allowing the UO to develop an independent governing board. The next Senior Vice President and Provost will have the opportunity to develop and implement strategies that help lead and ensure the continued growth and success of the campus’ schools, colleges, research centers, and institutes.

The individual who assumes the position of Senior Vice President and Provost must be an accomplished leader, have the ability to articulate a strong vision for the university, and possess a commitment to teaching and research excellence. S/he must understand the role and importance of the public university in society, and should be committed to finding ways to enhance research and educational prominence and improve outcomes to serve the university’s community broadly. The person must demonstrate an ability to navigate complexities facing all public universities in the current political, financial, technological, and global environment. Unquestionably the Senior Vice President and Provost should have a positive attitude; an active, energetic academic mind; and a leadership style that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, collaboration, and integrity.
