Shelter Veterinary Technician

The Michigan Humane Society (MHS) has full-time openings for Shelter Veterinary Technicians to directly support Shelter Veterinarians at our 3 shelters in Detroit, Rochester Hills, and Westland. Candidates must be able to work a flexible schedule including Mondays through Saturdays and an occasional Sunday as well as be able to travel between MHS’ shelters.

The Shelter Veterinary Technician’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to: administering medications, vaccines, and microchips as well as other treatments; treating shelter animals; assisting in surgery, including administering and monitoring anesthesia as well as preparation and recovery of patients and maintaining surgical equipment; performing procedures such as dentals, laboratory tests, and radiographs; filling and labeling prescriptions; performing humane euthanasia; documenting medical records; training Evaluators, Evaluator Assistants, and other shelter staff and assuring shelter protocols are being followed; providing client education; maintaining a clean and sanitary environment; monitoring supplies; and other duties as assigned.

Candidates must currently be licensed as a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) in Michigan and have a minimum of 3 years of LVT experience in a veterinary clinical setting. Shelter experience is preferred but not required, and previous management experience is helpful. Candidates must also maintain a positive work ethic and professional appearance at all times; be self-motivated; work independently with minimal supervision but also be a team player; be detail-oriented; be able to lift 50 pounds; have good communication skills; good conflict resolution skills; good decision making skills; and have basic computer skills (experience with Cornerstone software and Shelter Buddy is preferred).
