Shift Manager 3 rd Shift – Cortland, NY

The Shift Manager will lead approximately 50 production employees across multiple departments and areas in a union environment. The Shift Manager is responsible for their safety, quality, production spoilage and cost performance.

Develop, sustain and adapt training programs that are implemented through standard work practices that enable Value Streams and Work Cells to meet their respective business requirements.

Collaborate with Business Unit Leadership to develop a plan and execution strategy for improving the Safety, 5S (housekeeping and organization), Quality, Delivery, Inventory and Productivity (SQDIP) performance of the assigned Value Streams. Report necessary countermeasures and problem solving data to management in the daily management walkthroughs and reviews.

Plans, directs, and controls manufacturing operations, utilizing project management techniques to product products per schedules. Ensures effective and efficient work process management and communication systems are installed and maintained.

Plan and facilitate improvement events using Lean tools such as: Value Stream Mapping, Kaizen, Tornado, COFI, and general problem solving techniques to support and enable the business strategy.

Communicates with other departments and staff elements to ensure customer requirements are met in a timely manner. Controls the processing of all materials to meet quality standards to avoid scrap and rework expenses.

Supervises the utilization of all reporting personnel. Coaches and facilitates high performance behaviors, skills, and competencies. Utilizes PTM’s business proves and performance measurements to focus and align work efforts.

Selects, trains, appraises and develops reporting personnel in accordance with the union contract. Promotes growth and achievement of direct reports.

Collaborate with Operations management to support the hiring process, daily supervisory activities and the evaluation of Value Stream team members in terms of performance, qualification and teaming skills.

Reviews attendance and tardiness of personnel and takes disciplinary action as required within the uniform guidelines established.

Identifies and implements new process improvements to achieve cycle time reductions and reduce labor content.

Investigates product and process failures in concert with Engineering and Quality Control. Reports on manufacturing history relevant to failures.

Troubleshoots equipment and hardware problems in conjunction with engineering and production personnel.

Reports on technical problems to appropriate management with suggestions for improvements and solutions.

Support the development of project proposals including capital and tooling requests that are required by the Value Stream to meet business requirements. Use the eight disciplines of Quality (8-D format) to problem solve and communicate non-conformance events and as a means to improve the Quality performance of the assigned Value Streams.

A.A.S. degree or a High School diploma.

6+ years Supervisory/leadership experience in a manufacturing facility supervising 30 - 50 direct reports in production operations including safety, quality, production spoilage and cost performance.

Proven experience utilizing Kronos or similar time reporting systems, and structured problem solving such as 8-D, 5Y, CI tools, Kepner Trego or other root cause analysis to develop countermeasures and solutions.

Demonstrated experience training, coaching, facilitating, career development, performance management, project management, problem solving, equipment trouble shooting (welding/plastic forming/machining/engineered products), and track record of meeting production schedules.

Experience in a Lean manufacturing environment utilizing Value Stream mapping, Kaizen events, 5S, cell manufacturing and metrics preferred.

Experience with union activities a plus.
