Chester Upland Soccer for Success Program
Widener University, a metropolitan doctoral-intensive university, located in Chester, PA, is implementing an innovative after-school youth development program, Soccer for Success that uses soccer as a tool to combat childhood obesity and promote healthy lifestyles for boys and girls in urban communities. The aim is to improve the health of our participants in an environment that is both safe and encouraging.
Widener University's Office of Athletics is currently seeking candidates for the following positions:
Site Director
The Site Director is responsible for implementing the Soccer for Success Curriculum and overseeing a staff of coaches and volunteers to meet the necessary ratio of staff to participants at each designated location throughout the Chester Upland community. Each Site Director will oversee a staff of 6 to 15 coaches.
Qualified candidates must have a Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience in youth coaching and/or closely related field. Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, have a understanding of the Chester Upland communities; a passion for providing instruction to adolescents; and a valid driver's license. Preference will be given to candidates with experience with assessment tools and/or proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Access.
Site Directors will be paid $64 per 1 ½ hour session minus applicable payroll taxes. The Program will operate twice per year with each segment meeting 3 times per week for 12 weeks.
Head Coach
The Head Coach will be responsible for coaching, directing and overseeing all aspects of the after-school program. This will include teaching proper skills and skill development in soccer, providing instruction in team concepts and sports etiquette as well as determining individual and team strengths and developing strategies to maximize performance. The Head Coach will supervise the activities of Assistant Coaches, Coaching Aids and volunteers.
Qualified candidates must have a High School Diploma or equivalency, and at least 3 years of experience in coaching youth soccer and/or comparable playing experience. Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, have a understanding of the Chester Upland communities; a passion for providing instruction to adolescents; and a valid driver's license. Preference will be given to candidates with a Bachelor's Degree and at least 5 years of youth soccer coaching experience.
Head Coaches will be paid $40 per 1 ½ hour session minus applicable payroll taxes. The Program will operate twice per year with each segment meeting 3 times per week for 12 weeks.
Assistant Coach
The Assistant Coach will be responsible for assisting in the coaching, directing and oversight of the after-school program. This will include distributing participant and program equipment for daily use, providing weekly group reports to the Head Coach and/or Site Director containing information to include attendance, incident reports, successful program outcomes and highlights, measurement results (i.e. BMI and endurance testing)
Qualified candidates must have a High School Diploma or equivalency, and at least 1 year of experience in youth sports instruction or organization. Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, have a understanding of the Chester Upland communities; a passion for providing instruction to adolescents; and a valid driver's license. Preference will be given to candidates with a Bachelor's Degree and at least 2 years of experience in coaching youth soccer and/or comparable playing experience.
Assistant Coaches will be paid $20 per 1 ½ hour session minus applicable payroll taxes. The Program will operate twice per year with each segment meeting 3 times per week for 12 weeks.
Coaching Aid
The Coaching Aid will supplement the daily activities under the direction of the Site Director, Head Coach and Assistant Coach.
This is a volunteer position that encourages the involvement of students, parents and the community in making the Program a success. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age, possess a High School Diploma or equivalency, a passion for learning to provide instruction to adolescents and a valid driver's license. Preference will be given to those who have experience in youth sports and/or prior experience in playing and/or coaching soccer.
Becoming a Soccer Coaching Aid is a great way to gain the experience necessary to become an Assistant Coach, Head Coach and/or Site Director.
