This is a Social Services Assistant located in a residential group living situation on a Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center. The purpose of this position is to assist in supervising group living activities and to provide practical counseling to students.

The USDA Forest Service has legislative authority to recruit and fill Permanent (Career/Career-Conditional), Temporary, and Term Appointments under the USDA Demonstration Project. Under this authority, any U.S. citizen may apply. KEY REQUIREMENTS

Males born after 12/31/59 must be registered with the Selective Service.
Willing to live/work in remote locations.
Subject to a drug test prior to entrance on duty and randomly thereafter.

Required to work swing and night shift as determined by Center needs. DUTIES:

Duties listed are at the full performance level.

As a Social Service Assistant, has immediate responsibility for student proctor duties which include the following: Gives practical advice and counsel to students in order to assist in developing work skills. Gives practical advice and counsel to students and proposes solutions to routine problems without imposing personal values. Assigns individual duties by establishing student work rosters on a rotating basis and ensuring that students adhere to assigned tasks. Serves as a primary assistant to a Dormitory Manager. Provides on-site supervision of students to ensure a safe, healthy atmosphere. Facilitates student group counseling sessions. Meets individually with students to discuss day-to-day problems encountered in residential living. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements.

Grade 04: Six months of general experience that (1) demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position or (2) provided familiarity with the subject matter of the occupation AND six months specialized experience directly related to the line of work of the position to be filled and that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position; successful completion of 2 years of study that (a) included at least 12 semester hours of subjects directly related to the work of the position, or (b) was supplemented by experience in activities that afforded the opportunity to acquire and demonstrate the skills required by the position (the supplementary experience may have been gained, for example, in part-time or summer employment, in volunteer social welfare or recreation programs, or in community organizations); and/or equivalent combinations of successfully completed education and experience

Examples of qualifying general experience include but are not limited to: Providing child care, performing volunteer work at a youth camp, or performing community service with disadvantaged youths.

Examples of qualifying specialized experience include but are not limited to: group leader in community or residential recreation program; counselor in a youth summer c& instructor in a training program for the development of job skills; work that demonstrated the ability to be responsible for and to lead and train members of a job crew; group activities leader in the Armed Services; or aid or assistant to professional or specialist staff working with individuals who are addicted to or abuse alcohol and/or drugs.

The education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite.

Grade 05: One year of specialized experience at least equivalent to GS-4 that is in or directly related to the line of work of the position to be filled and that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position; successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree that (a) included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of subjects directly related to the work of the position; (b) included a major in social behavior, human behavior, or health care or; (c) was supplemented by specialized experience as described above for GS-4; and/or equivalent combinations of successfully completed education (in excess of the first 60 semester hours)and experience may be used to meet the experience requirements.

Examples of qualifying specialized experience include but are not limited to: group leader in community or residential recreation program; counselor in a youth summer c& instructor in a training program for the development of job skills; work that demonstrated the ability to be responsible for and to lead and train members of a job crew; group activities leader in the Armed Services; aid or assistant to professional or associate staff engaged in work of a social services nature in private, public welfare, government program, or community organizations, or in voluntary activities; or aid or assistant to professional or specialist staff working with individuals who are addicted to or abuse alcohol and/or drugs.

The education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite.

REQUIREMENTS:
May be subject to satisfactory completion of one year probationary or trial period.

Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

Must possess and maintain a valid commercial driver's license.

This position requires the selectee to obtain or possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and therefore, is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Department of Transportation (DOT)/Forest Service Alcohol and Controlled Substance Testing Program. Applicant tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use unless they currently occupy a TDP under the DOT/Forest Service Alcohol and Controlled Substances Testing Program. Final appointment is conditional on a negative drug test. This announcement constitutes 30 days advance notice.
