What you’ll be doing…
Here at Tableau, we love and use our products as much as our customers do. Using Tableau Server to understand our own data comes naturally and the thought of using our new features as soon as possible can sometimes trigger a true Pavlovian response! To support our business and engineering needs, we have several production-grade Tableau Server installations that we use, maintain, and explore with two goals: to maintain a world-class server cluster for our own use and simultaneously ensure our product is of the highest possible quality for our customers.
As a Software Engineer in the role of System Troubleshooter (aka “Software Detective and Tableau Server Explorer Extraordinaire”), you will apply your Tableau Server expertise, software engineering knowledge, love of exploring and understanding complex issues, and excellent diagnostic skills to help us achieve those goals. Some of the things you’ll be doing include…
Maintain production grade Tableau Server installations, fine-tuning for optimal performance, trolling for bugs and usability issues.
Exercise new features to explore their capabilities, increase your level of expertise in the product functionality, and uncover possible problems or improvements.
Analyze product log files, crash dumps, network traces, etc. to provide root cause analysis for failures reported against our internal servers or encountered during our full range of automated Tableau Server build and test processes.
Investigate problems reported by customers that involve complex configuration issues that require in-depth expertise, exploration and analysis. Implement tools, processes and visualizations to aid in diagnosing issues and other activities.
Look for patterns to gain insight into failures, that have been encountered either internally or externally, that are not generally reproducible but could be indicative of an underlying product issue. Work with other engineers and apply your system knowledge to help understand the nuances of particular system behaviors they have encountered.
Who you are…
Experienced. You have strong Tableau product knowledge, or ability to gain such knowledge quickly.
Investigator . You have excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to break down and understanding large, complex issues.
Highly Technical . You have a BSCS or equivalent work experience. You possess a solid understanding of server applications and database systems architecture. You have the ability to read and understand programming languages such as Java, Ruby and C++. Experience debugging and modifying source code, a definite plus.
