CustomMade, a Google Ventures portfolio companyis seeking software engineers to join our rapidly growing team. You’ll have the opportunity to build great software to expand and evolve a rapidly growing two-sided commerce platform already used by millions of people. Your ideas will directly impact not just the features of our platform but will create technology that causes others to say, “We need to do that too!”
About Our Engineering Team
The Engineering team at CustomMade believes that creating great software is a work of passion, creativity and skill. Inspired by CustomMade’s artisan makers, we believe that small teams of empowered engineering makers can create amazing technology. Here are a few of the interesting challenges we are tackling:
Enabling consumers to search for (and visualize) items that do not even exist yet
Building the ideal commerce knowledge graph for a custom two-way marketplace
Allowing seamless co-creation between consumers and artisan makers over web and mobile
If these challenges seem too big—or too far off in the future—think again. On the same day Facebook launched Social Graph Search beta, we launched our first release of Custom Commerce Graph search.
Our current platform is built on Python (mostly using Django), ElasticSearch, Redis, Celery, MySQL, and many more open source and open web technologies. (However, we always keep an eye out for new technologies and approaches to create the best custom marketplace. Right now we are exploring how backbone.js can change the boundaries between front end and back end software.)
About The Job
You will be a hands-on software engineering lead with a key voice in how we build major portions of our platform. You’ll—
Work collaboratively, in small, fast-moving teams (projects take hours or days, not weeks)
Build features that let consumers buy whatever they can imagine, custom-made
Design for scalability, resiliency and performance
You will be able to make an impact, fast. The work you accomplish will directly correlate with the success of our company. You’ll quickly see your ideas and work live, on our platform and in daily business processes. You will have many opportunities to grow your role and contributions as we continue to grow.
You’re passionate about creating efficient, high-performance web applications. While you have may have done this across many open source domains, Python is your favorite language to do this today. You have used Django—and would love to explore where Django is best and where other frameworks like Flask are better. You have a working knowledge of SQL and bash and love using rapid deployments to quickly bring new ideas to production.
Ideally, You have mastered Git—preferably in a continuous deployment environment using automated test tools. (Perhaps you have contributed to open source—if so, we’d love to see and learn from your code). You are experienced with AWS and embrace the collaborative DevOps model. You find the story of how Instagram responded to massive traffic increases one you would love to repeat.
CustomMade, a Google Ventures company, is changing the way people shop by making buying custom easier. We want to be an alternative to big box retailers by providing an online marketplace that connects consumers with artisans across the country. Take a look at our vision for this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5ZixpZ0ZYs .
We are creating an experience where Buyers can connect with an artisan Maker to co-create something unique. Buyers won’t see a shopping cart or checkout tag on our site. Instead they will meet thousands of Makers who are thrilled about the prospect of creating something with them.
