As a member of the central IT organization's Custom Development team within the Applications division, this position's primary responsibility is to install, test, and support CIT web hosting environments. Current environments include: ColdFusion, LAMP, Tomcat, CommonSpot and Static. CIT Hosting provides service for over 1,000 campus websites.
Primary responsibilities include software installation/updates, configuration and management thereof. Additional duties include participation in integration of Cornell infrastructure components such as authentication, authorization services, identities, web services and messaging into vendor/open source software packages. Once application stacks are in production use, the service support team will periodically escalate to this position for tier-3 support (24x7 on-call support responsibilities for this position exist but will be infrequent, and not on a set schedule). Work requires the ability to work with regulated and University confidential data with discretion and in accordance with University policy.
In the area of Hosting, this position also includes:
Leading cloud hosting vendor reviews, creating test sites/installs in cloud hosting solutions and testing, reporting back findings.
Responding to customer special hosting configuration requests through a for-fee service.
Consulting with campus partners on various on and off campus solutions.
Partnering with central IT's Systems, Web Services and Cloud support teams as needed.
Following established web security best practices.
Following established IT change management processes for any updates.
This position will also have a dual responsibility to help serve our Custom Code Troubleshooting for-fee service for campus along with assisting the other Custom Development teams as assigned (Integrated Web Services and Custom Applications).
The person in this role will need to gain and maintain an understanding of all “web” related services central IT offers (from hosting to development and support). Having this understanding will help in our efforts to make all things “web and hosting” more streamlined for campus customers.
BS/BA in an IT related field, or equivalent experience
More than 5 years of industry experience relative to the Position Summary
3+ years experience working with complex applications development and integration. Must have the ability and experience to manage multiple and simultaneous priorities across projects.
maintaining linux web servers
RPM or other package management systems
Puppet or other configuration management tools
web application design and development using frameworks like Ruby on Rails.
Ruby, Java, PHP, Python, Perl and/or ColdFusion programming
Able to demonstrate an ability to develop competence in new subject areas with little or no formal training or oversight, and continuously expand knowledge about technology and methods supportive of campus business processes.
Knowledge of web server and application security best practices.
Ability to diagnose web application performance problems and provide solutions.
Able to analyze requirements, propose solutions, work collaboratively to divide up work, and meet individual and team deadlines.
Must be able to work effectively in a dynamic, deadline driven, complex, team-based environment with multiple competing priorities and rapidly changing environment.
