Conducts detailed criminal investigations of illegal activity specializing in all aspects of financial crimes, including but not limited to fraud, embezzlement, money laundering, forgery and violations of the Virginia Governmental Fraud Act. Analyzes financial data and prepares related documentation. Maintains current knowledge of trends and patterns at local, state, and national level in matters related to criminal investigations. Completes necessary training to maintain certification and competency in fields of criminal investigations. Maintains liaisons and professional working relationships with state, local and federal agencies. Maintains communication and effective working relationships with federal and local prosecutors to contribute to successful prosecution of suspects.
Knowledge of criminal laws of the Commonwealth and methods and techniques of criminal investigations. Experience demonstrating considerable knowledge of accounting/auditing principles; of compiling and analyzing data to make investigative recommendations; of principles of civil and criminal law investigations; of state and federal laws relating to thefts, fraud, embezzlement, tax, and other related criminal violations. Experience demonstrating effective decision-making and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to write investigative reports and present contents verbally. To be considered for this position, candidates should possess an accounting degree (Bachelor's or Associate's) from an accredited institution of higher learning, and/or a Bachelor's or Associates degree in another field with a minimum of 18 credit hours of accounting courses, or have extensive experience in conducting financial investigations or audits. Applicants who possess extensive experience in conducting financial investigations and audits in lieu of a degree must thoroughly document this information on their application.
