The United States Attorneys Office for the Northern District of New York (NDNY) is seeking applications from attorneys who are willing to accept an unpaid temporary position as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney (SAUSA) in the Civil Division in Albany, NY.
The United States Attorney's Office prosecutes federal criminal offenses and represents the United States in civil cases. The Northern District of New York is comprised of 32 counties in upstate New York, a territory comparable to the combined area of Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. We have staffed offices in Syracuse (headquarters), Albany, Binghamton, and Plattsburgh. Our Assistant U.S. Attorneys appear before federal judges in those cities and Utica. (Auburn, Malone, and Watertown also are designated sites for court). Our Albany Office is staffed by 16 Assistant U.S. Attorneys and 15 support personnel.

The successful applicant will handle cases involving bankruptcy, prisoners, collections and IRS summons enforcement. The successful applicant may also handle other civil cases including defensive torts (including medical practice cases), Bivens claims, employment discrimination, affirmative civil enforcement (including False Claims Act matters), and appeals. Day-to-day responsibilities may include researching legal issues, drafting motions or motion responses, drafting interrogatories and requests for admissions, taking and defending depositions, attending settlement conferences, and conducting hearings and trials. The SAUSA will receive training in handling civil matters in federal court, and will have the opportunity to attend formal training or conferences with SAUSAs and Assistant United States Attorneys from across the country.
Applicants must possess a J.D. degree from an accredited law school, be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of a State, territory, or the District of Columbia. Applicants must also be active members in good standing of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least one year of post J.D. legal or other relevant experience.
