Special Education Teacher Assistant

Christopher House Elementary School is now looking for a Special Education Teacher Assistant to support rigorous, data-driven instruction in a nurturing school climate to close the achievement gap for the low-income student body. We are looking for ambitious and reflective teachers committed to their own professional growth in order to maximize their impact on student achievement. Exempt position and reports to : Case Manager/Special Education Teacher

Special Education Teacher Assistant Objective : Provide for the education and development of students with special needs. Promote school culture and ensure the needs of all learners in the classroom are met.

Responsibilities : Provide a high quality learning environment and instruction that meets the needs of children with special needs. Help monitor IEPs that ensure students with special needs are provided a high quality education in the least restrictive learning environment.

Support Special Education Teacher in developing and implementing lesson plans consisten with the Common Core and, Illinois State Board of Education Learning standards, and the schools' college prep curriculum and that directly addresses students' individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and benchmarks. Provide necessary accommodations and modifications outline in students’ IEPs. Set high expectations and promote school culture for students with special needs. Use data-driven evaluation and reflective teaching evaluation to improve instruction and increase academic achievement of students. Leverage the arts to promote student achievement, creativity and critical-thinking skills.

Develop a strong home-school relationship with the families in order to ensure effective communication to best meet the needs of students. Collaborate and communicate with parents and caregivers regarding children’s learning needs and how they can support their children’s academic, emotional and behavioral development. Meet with families as needed and serve as a positive representative for Christopher House. Communicate school-wide and agency-wide events to parents.

Team Orientation: Work collaboratively with the Special Education Teacher and General Education teachers to meet the needs of all students in the classroom. Promote parents’ and caregiver’s role as a team player in their children’s academic, emotional and behavioral development.

Administrative: Complete necessary assessments, reports and records in an accurate and timely manner.

Professional Development: Participate in weekly professional development workshops. Attend summer professional development series, trainings, and particpate on relevant committee's as needed for position. Expand professional knowledge through Christopher House in-agency training and development programs, through professional conferences and education and by membership in appropriate professional groups.

Quality Assurance: Utilize data-driven assessment tools NWEA and STEP to recommendd curriculum and instructional choices. Participate in regular data and assessment review sessions in order to differentiate instruction and create more effective classroom learning.

Schedule : Assistants are expected to arrive at 7:30 am every morning and stay until 4:00 pm. A dedicated lunch break and planning period are included daily. Each Friday, students will have early dismissal at 1:30pm and teachers will participate in professional development from 1:30p.m. – 4:00p.m. Teachers will also be expected to participate in planning meetings and special events after school from time to time. These meetings will be announced by the Principal in advance. Assistants will follow the academic calendar for vacations and holidays.

Qualifications: Bi-lingual skills in Spanish and/or experience working with students that are special needs and English Language Learners highly desirable.

Education : Bachelor’s degree required. Para-professional certification required. Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Elementary Education or Child Development preferred.
