  • OR TC3S- Education Specialist Instruction Credential - VI - Visual Impairments

    Role and function of the Special Education Teacher for the Visually Impaired:

    Establish and provide methods and strategies including Braille, technology, low vision aids, and adaptive learning skills/ services required to meet the unique educational needs of visually impaired and blind students in the least restrictive environment.

    • Serve students with visual impairments in a one-to-one or small group (resource room) setting; and supervise paraprofessional staff assigned to VI program.

    • Provide Braille instruction and training for the purpose of assisting students’ access to classroom curriculum.

    • Assess students with formal and informal instruments for the purpose of identifying educational needs including curricular, social, technological, and related equipment.

    • Determine, devise, and provide specialized instruction and services. Perform diagnostics and minor repairs of adaptive equipment at school sites.

    • Consult with certificated staff, including general education, mild/moderate, and moderate/severe, regarding the provision of instruction to students with visual impairments.

    • Provide technical advice, training, and guidance concerning visual impairments to staff, administration, parents, students, and agencies, including understanding eye conditions, modification of classroom and instructional materials, effective teaching techniques, and use and care of specialized equipment.

    • Participate in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), including establishment of well-defined goals, transition supports/services, implementation of the IEP, progress monitoring, provision of instructional materials, and classroom accommodations.

    • Develop transition plans to move students to targeted, integrated or community-based activities or transition to adulthood.

    • Collaborate effectively with VI team members, including Orientation and Mobility specialists, Instructional Assistants, and Braille transcriber.
