Through working for rail owners, municipalities and operators worldwide, our Transit & Rail Sector provides independent consultancy services in all of the core mass transit modes, including trams, light rail, metro systems, rapid light transit, airport people-movers and monorail. Our recoginized Industry Experts are privy to a unique knowledge and base, complete with experience of mass transit system development and modification around the globe. Combining technical excellence with business insight, we deliver solutions that accord with widely differing demands. From project delivery in the confines of an operational railway to maximizing the value of control and signaling assets, we plan, design, and enable solutions.
Atkins seeks a Sr. Director of Transit & Rail for our North American operations. In this highly entrepreneurial role, you will have significant input developing the ATKINS’ marketing and operations capability in the Transit & Rail markets. You will be able to leverage Atkins’ more than 3000 Rail Experts globally to solidify your ultimate success. Our ideal candidate will be a true seller/doer with proven experience developing relationships, identifying target projects and closing sales of both GECs and mega projects for public sector clients in rail transit. While new business development is important, equally critical will be this candidate’s hands on management approach to projects, solidifying the highest caliber of service and satisfaction for our clients. Finally, our ideal candidate will have general knowledge of all aspects of rail infrastructure, with specific expertise in rail systems and operations, and will couple this commercial acumen with an established professional network of industry contacts to bring substantial growth to our client base in this sector. The ideal candidate should be prepared to be ultimately responsible for annual revenues in excess of $5M and over 40 staff.
Typical duties and responsibilities of this position are:
Provide leadership, direction and guidance to staff to ensure that quality technical services are provided to clients and that the group meets its operating performance targets.
Manage client relations, project acquisition, contract negotiations, and financial management within your group to ensure quality, client satisfaction, continued production backlog, and profitability of all projects within the group.
Utilize existing professional contacts, association networking, media opportunities and sector expertise to grow our existing client service offering as well as gaining new clients/accounts.
Implement business development plans and objectives aligned with the company’s strategic initiatives.
Ensure the Company’s Risk Assessment Process is utilized, and resulting risk management plans are implemented, in coordination with Legal and Finanace Departments.
Maintains personal chargeability in excess of 50% or at a rate designated by Senior Management.
In order to support the significant growth projected for this sector in the next 3-5 years, the successful candidate will have the following certifications, core compentencies and required experience:
A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical discipline. A post graduate degree is preferred. Management coursework and/or MBA a plus.
Fifteen years of ever-increasing management experience is preferred, with at least 5 years in project management of projects exceeding $5m in engineering fees or $100m in capital cost.
Ten years of specific experience in rail systems (signal, communication, and traction power) design, construction management, and/or commissioning implementation – with some experience on brown field projects strongly preferred.
Demonstrable experience in contract negotiations, financial management, contract formation, estimating, risk assessment, and project close out.
Knowledge of railway operations, system safety and associated requirements and experience applying those items to project proposal and the navigation of government regulation.
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written, including technical writing), a high level of self-management, commitment, and trust with an affinity for underlying company values; an an approach that permits effective communication amongst Staff, Senior Management, Clients, and applicable Regulatory Bodies.
