Senior Employee Relations Specialist - M&T Bank
Location: Northern New Jersey
M&T Bank's Employee Relations Center of Excellence is seeking an experienced Senior Employee Relations Specialist to deliver top quality ER services for a designated line of business.
Serve as the Employee Relations Specialist for our Retail business in New Jersey, Southern Connecticut and portions of New York State that are in close proximity.
Deliver high quality decisions and counsel consistently to managers and employees. Identify and analyze employee relations matters and recommend appropriate employment action to maintain a productive work environment, achieve optimal performance, and minimize risk to the Bank.
Administer the Bank's Corrective Action Program to include: coaching and counseling managers and employees on performance management including performance improvement plans, and the entire range of the progressive discipline process. Prepare documentation and input to bank systems consistent with bank standards and practices.
Receive complaints, conduct investigations with general supervision, recommend and resolve problems, and counsel employees. Counsel managers on progressive discipline, highlighting the legal requirements and ramifications. Participate in the EEO/Human Rights/Wage and Hour regulatory complaints and may represent the Bank at investigative conferences, unemployment hearings and meetings.
Counsel employees on conduct issues, including disputes with co-workers, supervisors, subordinates or management, financial problems, illness or disability and performance problems. Facilitate dispute resolution.
Serve as a mentor and/or subject matter expert to Employee Relations Specialists on complex HR issues with significant impact. Participate in senior level HR projects as required and work with senior level management to adjudicate high level complex ER issues.
Act as a consultant to regional management on Affirmative Action and EEO policies and practices. Conduct presentations as needed to employees and management on employee relations topics. Support training programs for various levels within the organization on Bank policy, sexual harassment, legal issues, and performance management.
Support exit interview process to include analyzing results and follow-up to appropriate individuals.
Interpret inquiries regarding HR personnel policies and procedures and reports policies issues to corporate employee relations.
Act as resource for Human Resource Business Partners, specifically on employee relations issues. Provide presentations on legal related issues and government regulations.
Minimum Qualifications Required:
Bachelors degree or in lieu of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience
8 or more years of HR generalist and/or employee relations experience with significant experience consulting on employee relations issues and conducting and leading investigations OR 5+ years of experience as a Labor Attorney
Experience mentoring or leading others
Excellent verbal and written communications skills and sound analytical ability and judgment
Previous internal investigations experience
Strong technical competency in employee relations pertaining to employment law and Employee Relations related policies and procedures and demonstrated skill in interpretation and application of that knowledge
Ability to handle multiple priorities and converging input with the ability to use independent judgment to make decisions
Ability to interact with all levels of employees with tact and diplomacy
Ability to travel, including overnight travel up to 3 nights per month
Ability to serve in an on-call capacity during non-working hours on a rotating basis
Ideal Qualifications Preferred:
Experience in an HR Generalist and/or Employee Relations Capacity handling populations of >1,000 employees
Current experience in a dedicated Employee Relations role
