As a highly experienced individual life Underwriter for our Individual Distribution producers, you will evaluate complex applications for individual life insurance and accept or decline the risk based upon analysis of medical history, occupational hazards, financial background, insurable interest or other information pertinent to the decision. You will interact daily with producers and agents to gather information and explain decisions and courses of action. As a member of an underwriting team, you will work with a variety of internal and external partners to ensure prompt and efficient service to our customers, achieve departmental goals and service standards, and consult with medical and underwriting experts. You will participate in ongoing, highly detailed training designed to continue to develop your skills and knowledge with risk assessment, medical concepts and terminology, customer service and business systems and processes. Approval authority of $3-5 million. May have authority to co-sign on cases for less experienced underwriters and provide guidance to less experienced staff. May represent the company at business meetings and industry functions and deliver underwriting presentations.
Competencies and Skills
A senior level individual contributor with strong working knowledge of life insurance principals, products, services and operations who excels at impaired risk assessment.
Excellent written and oral communication skills to communicate clearly and concisely by telephone, email and via the new business systems. Strong listening skills to ensure understanding of the producer’s questions and concerns. Ability to effectively communicate underwriting assessments and adverse decisions to internal and external customers with ability to negotiate equitable solutions.
Ability to foster and develop successful professional relationships to elicit the trust and confidence of our customers
Ability to exercise sound underwriting business judgment and discretion to find creative solutions while maintaining the integrity of MetLife guidelines and philosophy
Ability to partner with business key stakeholders (sales, medical department, chief underwriters, reinsurance) to assist with solutions which benefit all parties
Demonstrates a customer focuses and proactive approach to daily responsibilities
Works with a sense of accountability and ownership; results driven
Easily adaptable to changes in business processes, work priorities and work environment

High School Diploma/GED
8-10 years individual life underwriting experience
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent business training
FINRA Series 6 and 26 or the ability to obtain with 12 months of hire
AALU, FALU or FLMI highly desired
