This Accountant will perform a leadership role in the JIB Accounting Team by serving as the Lead Accountant for the operated JIB processes as well as training and mentoring less experienced accountants. They will be responsible for complex accounting assignments and projects, and will recommend changes in accounting methods and procedures. This position requires significant involvement with oil and gas E&P accounting and COPAS guidance. This individual will coordinate with other departments, locations and divisions in resolving problems and will have a key role in developing strategic processes for top-quartile accounting execution.
Develop and direct operated JIB accounting and reporting processes and procedures, including billable costs, MTs and material inventories, ad valorem tax accruals, and the monthly JIB process.
Support, review, and approve operated JIB processes and entries as well as the monthly accounting close process.
Research and determine accounting treatment for JIB accounting issues and non-routine transactions, and assess financial statement impacts, create management recommendations and conclusions, and monitor and document execution into the accounting records
Prepare special analysis, execute projects, and implement change initiatives successfully into the operational as assigned
Challenge, automate, & streamline accounting processes and procedures
Develop, document & maintain accounting and reporting processes and procedures
Analyze and review operational reports for management
Prepare, analyze and/or review various general ledger account reconciliations and analysis reports
Perform ad hoc analysis on complex Accounting reports and projects
Assess financial statement risk to integrate, adjust, and maintain an appropriate JIB internal control structure and related SOX documentation
Respond to inquiries from operators and internal customers and resolve issues
Oversee in the preparation, analysis, and review of audit work papers
Assist the outside and internal auditors in their examination of SM Energy’s consolidated financial statements by providing requested information
Conduct business with the highest ethical standards; demonstrate decision-making skills that ensure the safety of all persons associated with SM facilities
Other duties as assigned
Bachelor’s Degree from a four year University in Accounting or Finance, M.S. degree is preferred
Minimum of 8 years of experience with accounting practices; Oil and Gas Accounting experience preferred. Public Accounting experience is preferred. CPA Preferred.

Excellent skills in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook. Excalibur Accounting and/or SAP software knowledge is a plus
Working knowledge of COPAS guidelines preferred
Proficient ability to interpret documents such as manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, JOAs, and COPAS documents
Excellent written / verbal communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to demonstrate a strong work ethic, critical thinking and attention to detail
