Reporting to the Chief Patent Counsel, the incumbent will perform patent projects. Duties will primarily include preparing and prosecuting patent applications in pharmaceutical NCE and formulation technologies, assisting in the development of freedom-to-operate analyses and patent landscaping,. Duties also will include assisting Chief Patent Counsel with due diligence analysis of merger and acquisition targets, plus negotiation of license agreements. Position will regularly interact with Chief Patent Counsel.
The position will involve working directly with scientists in Purdue's discovery research and pharmaceutical formulation departments to secure intellectual property protection for the results of the company's research efforts. The position will also involve working with members of Purdue's Law Department including in-house patent attorneys, as well as external attorneys (both U.S. and foreign), and other internal and external parties as needed to ensure that patent filings are drafted and prosecuted effectively.
The position will involve independently drafting and filing new patent applications, and successfully prosecuting pending patent applications (U.S. and foreign) related to Purdue's pharmaceutical business and research efforts.
The position will include analyzing patentability of new inventions, and determining freedom to operate of research activities and new pharmaceutical compounds and formulations.
The position will also involve participating in the negotiation and drafting of patent licenses, laboratory service agreements, consulting agreements and other types of agreements.
The position will also involve attending research meetings and committee meetings as required, and advising on possible research directions to help strengthen Purdue's intellectual property portfolio.
The position will also involve presenting the results of legal analysis at program team meetings and higher level committee meetings.

Educational Requirements

BS or MS degree in pharmaceutical science, organic chemistry or biology
Registered to practice as patent attorney before USPTO

Candidate will have a minimum of 6 years legal experience in pharmaceutical, chemical or biological patent practice, particularly patent preparation and prosecution.
Candidate for the position will be registered to practice as a patent attorney before the USPTO, and will have a strong background in a field relevant to carrying out patent prosecution work at a modern U.S. pharmaceutical company (e.g., advanced degree in pharmaceutical science, organic chemistry, or biology). Candidate must be able to analyze and help guide complex research activities and outcomes in discovery research and pharmaceutical formulation programs under U.S. Patent Law and particularly in view of the new AIA rules and regulations. Candidates will preferentially be considered who also have a working knowledge of U.S. pharmaceutical regulatory law, particularly related to regulatory exclusivities and ANDA filings.Brief Description/Overview:
