Sr. Permitting Services Specialist

Job Description

This position can be under filled as a Permitting Services Specialist II, Grade 24.

$54,054 - $89,596

This position may be under filed as a Permitting Services Specialist I, Grade 21.

$47,028 - $77,756

Employee will be responsible for reviewing construction documents, specifications and calculations for compliance with adopted codes and standards regulating fire suppression systems and fire alarm systems design and installation; determining when alternative designs represent equivalence to meet requirements of established codes and standards; explaining technical and procedural requirements to clients, developers, engineers, architects, contractors, the public and other agencies through meetings and discussions conducted in the office or field; and enforcing the requirements of NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, NFPA 13 Installation of Sprinkler Systems, NFPA 13D Installation of Sprinkler Systems in One and Two Family Dwellings, NFPA 13R Installation of Sprinkler Systems in Residential Occupancies Up To and Including Four Stories in Height, NFPA 14 Installation of Standpipe Systems, NFPA 17A Installation of Wet Chemical Extinguishing Systems, NFPA 20 Installation of Stationary Fire Pumps, NFPA 72 National Fire Alarm Code other related NFPA standards, and other State, County and Federal Laws, codes and regulations relating to fire suppression and fire alarm systems.

Minimum Qualifications

Senior Permitting Services Specialist, Grade 26

Experience : Five (5) years of professional experience in the professional/technical field of fire sprinkler and fire alarm design and/or plans review.

Education : A Bachelors degree in Fire Protection Engineering or a closely related engineering or technical field.

Equivalency : An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Permitting Services Specialist II, Grade 24

Experience : Three (3) years of professional experience in the professional/technical field of fire sprinkler and fire alarm design and/or plans review.

Education : A Bachelors degree in Fire Protection Engineering or a closely related engineering or technical field.

Equivalency : An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Permitting Services Specialist I, Grade 21

Experience : One (1) year of professional, paraprofessional or technical experience in the professional/technical field of fire sprinkler and fire alarm design and/or plans review.

Education : A Bachelors degree in Fire Protection Engineering or a closely related engineering or technical field.

Equivalency : An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Preferred Criteria

Resume must include information specific to the preferred criteria listed below. Make sure that your resume references your knowledge, skills, and abilities as they relate to the preferred criteria. Ideally, the preferred criteria should be addressed in a separate section in your resume. The system only allows for one document to be submitted so your preferred criteria must be part of the resume.

1. Level II certification in sprinkler design/layout by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET)

2. Demonstrate experience in the design and installation related to fire suppression systems and fire alarm systems.

3. Demonstrate experience in referencing NFPA 101, NFPA 13, NFPA 13D, NFPA 13R, NFPA 14 and NFPA 20, NFPA 72 and other related standards, as well as other applicable codes, ordinances and regulations pertinent to the enforcement of the fire/building codes.

4. Experience in, or the ability to acquire experience in computer applications relevant to plan review/permits.

5. Skill and experience reading and interpreting plans, specifications and blueprints, hydraulic calculations and analysis quickly and accurately and to determine whether designs are performed in accordance with applicable codes and standards.

6. Skill in communicating technical guidance and in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with staff, permittees, community representatives, and representatives of other jurisdictions.

7. Skill in conducting analytical evaluation of fire suppression and fire alarm system designs, methods and computations.

All applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be reviewed and rated by subject matter experts based on the Preferred Criteria. Based on the results of Preferred Criteria evaluation, applicants will be rated and placed on the Eligible List as either "Qualified" or "Well Qualified." The highest rated applicants will be placed on the Eligible List and may be considered for interview. Employees meeting minimum qualifications who are same grade or higher will be placed on Eligible List as a "Transfer" candidate and may be considered for interview. Note: In the event there are 5 or less minimally qualified candidates, all will be placed on the Eligible List as Qualified and will be interviewed.
