The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is looking for a Senior Speechwriter. This position will be the lead speechwriter for the SHRM President and CEO, focused on preparing speeches, presentations and other written materials, including keynote addresses, monthly columns, video scripts, and conference scripts for the SHRM membership and external audiences. The position reports to the Director of Organizational Communications, but will work across the organization with a variety of people outside the function. The Senior Speechwriter oversees all aspects of CEO speeches and presentations, including support for required at events. The position also provides support to SHRMs Leadership Team as necessary.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Plan, create, and oversee the execution of communications campaigns to advance the organizations brand awareness and reputation in the marketplace Create a consistent voice, tone and message across various modes of communication including but not limited to executive speeches and presentations, emails, newsletters, collateral, and articles Work with appropriate senior leaders, as needed, to inform /provide perspective to organizational communication efforts Gather and synthesize information from multiple internal and external sources on tight deadline Support communications needs of functional leaders as necessary. Provide creative ideas including photographs and other material to illustrate content, and approve content layout Work with colleagues in other functions (i.e., Public Affairs, Social Media Marketing, Marketing, Publications, Human Resources, etc.) to develop and execute communications strategies, campaigns and tactics, and to provide editorial guidance in alignment with corporate goals and to promote message consistency across the organization Work discretely on sensitive or delicate assignments, exercise sound editorial judgment and maintain the trust andconfidence of senior executives and their teams
Strong background in writing with excellent editing and proofreading skills Must be able to draft quality speeches in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment Must be able to demonstrate a flexible, adaptable and collaborative personality, with an insatiable curiosity and drive to provide creative and original thought Must have a proven track record in executive communication Demonstrated aptitude for understanding complex issues and the ability to translate and simplify them for key audiences Strong research ability isrequired An understanding and familiarity of the HR profession is preferable
EXPERIENCE and/or EDUCATION
Bachelors Degree in Communications, Journalism, English, or related field Must have 7 or more years of relevant experience
