Sr. Technical Product Manager
The Sr. Technical Product Manager supports da Vinci minimally invasive surgical system development from concept to launch. This includes facilitation of the product roadmap, user research, product and feature proposals, market requirements, product requirements, shepherding the product through development, user testing, and hand-off to the product marketing rollout team. The Sr. Technical Product Manager has a detailed understanding of the customer-facing features of the da Vinci system, instruments and accessories, as well as a solid grounding in the underlying technical implementation. The Sr. Technical Product Manager represents the voice of the customer (business needs) and the voice of the user (user needs) to the design engineering teams during the product development process.
Roles and Responsibilities
This position has responsibility and authority for:
Define and maintain the product roadmap and portfolio by working with company stakeholders to strategically support the business goals of the company. This includes providing the short term and long range product objectives as well as tracking competitive products and emerging technology.
Develop the business justification for new products and features by working with customers and company stakeholders.
Work with clinical engineering, interaction design, industrial design, and human factors, to perform user research through interviews, case observations, focus groups, and user testing. Communicate findings to the rest of the organization.
Create and refine market and product requirements with input and feedback from customers and company stakeholders. Negotiate product requirements with engineering and ensure the product is kept in alignment with the needs of the customer and business during the course of the development.
Lead the ongoing development of the product strategy by developing a framework for decision making. Shepherd the product through its development via relentless identification and closure of user and business issues. Think carefully about the user, business, and development impact of product decisions. Be creative about marshaling resources to complete objectives (including filling in when no one else can) and provide clarity on product direction when possible. Continue to drive progress in the face of ambiguity. Proactively communicate with senior management on the product development status and product quality issues both informally and through formal reviews.
Facilitate decision-making during the development process and ensure that the new product designs are aligned with user needs, business needs, and established design principles.
Conduct user testing. Work closely with human factors, interaction design, and clinical engineering teams to provide a thorough user testing program for new features and products. Communicate conclusions and recommendations to product development teams.
Perform the tasks necessary to hand-off the product to the product marketing rollout team (e.g. product training, core positioning and messaging content, etc.)
Facilitate industrial design and interaction design efforts on new product designs by establishing design requirements, prioritizing design efforts, coordinating design reviews, and documenting and communicating design decisions.
Manage business relationships with key development partners ensuring healthy dialogue and clear, efficient decision making.
Support the continuing engineering effort. Establish and maintain product priorities with input and feedback from customers and company stakeholders. Work on cross-functional teams to resolve product issues.

Must be a highly passionate individual that notices and cares about design details and the users' experience with the product.
Minimum 4 years of experience as a Product Manager or Product Marketing Manager desired with a history of defining and launching excellent products.
BS degree in Biomedical, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, or demonstrated experience of bringing highly engineered products to market is highly preferred.
Experience with minimally invasive instruments and accessories desired. Medical device experience is highly preferred. Combination of hardware and software based development experience is preferred.
Strong knowledge of general surgery market is highly preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting to Senior Management.
Experience managing technical product requirements is preferred.
Excellent teamwork skills with proven ability to collaborate across multiple disciplines to ensure product success and ability to influence cross-functional teams without formal authority. This includes the ability to work well in bridging communication between engineering, marketing, sales, and customers.
Ability to set and meet goals based on department and corporate objectives.
Ability to work in surgical labs required.
Ability to travel up to 25% of the time.
