Manages a variety of duties pertaining to the Oracle Sun Solaris Unix, various flavors of Linux, and Storage Area Network (SAN) computing environment including servers, backup systems, storage arrays and networks. Supervision received is essentially administrative, with assignments given in terms of broad general objectives and limits. Works with wide latitude for unreviewed action or decision. Communicate and document system changes and status on a regular basis while tracking major projects using Microsoft Project.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Lead the installation of all upgrades, patches and new versions of Oracle Sun Solaris Unix and Linux operating systems and software to ensure the security and performance of systems. Administer NFS, Solaris Volume Manager, Veritas file system, Zones and Containers, Apache, Tomcat, DNS, and other common system administrator operating system tasks. Make certain all software is properly supported, and is in compliance with vendor licensing agreements. Ensure all changes are planned and completed with minimal impact to the users.
Manage the administration of the Storage Area Network (SAN) environments using Hitachi Device Manager, including these storage arrays and related management software: Hitachi USPV, Hitachi WMS100, Hitachi AMS2300; Brocade 5000 fibre switches, fibre cabling, and system fibre HBA’s. Ensure all changes are planned and completed with minimal impact to the users. Ensure system throughput within desired tolerances. Work with Hitachi engineers on firmware and application upgrades for all storage systems on a regular basis.
Manage the performance of accurate and timely backups of all systems using EMC Legato Networker. Lead the planning, documentation, and execution of Disaster Recovery plans for backup systems and all business critical Unix and Linux systems. Also setup backup and restore capabilities for various Microsoft Windows systems including Exchange.
Administer the installation of new Unix and Linux related hardware to ensure systems remain current and service to the users is within their expectations. Administer Lantronix and Belkin serial console devices. Perform RAM, hard drive, power supply, optical drive, HBA installations, and other hardware upgrades as needed. Ensure all changes are planned and completed with minimal impact to the users.
Lead the research of emerging systems and data storage products and services in support of system enhancement and development efforts. Stays future focused and provides strategic direction regarding system and data storage design and best practices. Recommend, schedule, and perform improvements, upgrades, and/or purchases of new systems. Develop technical documentation and procedures for the Unix and Linux systems and data storage.
Must be willing to work outside of normal work hours for special projects and on call responsibilities. Responsible for reacting to all off-hour calls regarding system problems in a prompt and reasonable time. Must be willing to work under flooring, in wiring closets, ceilings, and walls as necessary.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelors of Science degree in Computer Science or related field and 7+ years relevant experience as a System Administrator Required.
