The Staff Counsel reports to the Managing Counsel and will be responsible primarily for the litigation of assigned lawsuits from inception through conclusion. The Staff Counsel should be prepared to consult with and advise management and staff on litigation issues, including the rendering of legal opinions on coverage issues and other legal matters as assigned or approved by Managing Counsel. Other essential job responsibilities will include:
  • Defend insureds in litigation
  • Represent the company in litigation
  • Review and analyze Special Investigation Unit (SIU) claims, conduct Examinations Under Oath and provide input for coverage determination
  • Supervise, evaluate and train Legal support staff
  • Advise management and staff regarding legal changes in the industry to ensure compliance with new guidelines
  • Review contracts and provide legal guidance to office management and staff
  • Conduct seminars to educate Claims Department about legal issues in the industry and coordinate "Settlement Day" functions as appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned by the Managing Counsel


Minimum experience and skills requirements include:
  • At least five years insurance defense litigation experience is required
  • Excellent communication, presentation, persuasion and negotiation skills
  • Computer proficiency along with experience using Microsoft Office applications (Word, Windows, Excel)
  • Strong knowledge of Westlaw/Lexis and other legal research tools
  • The ability to perform basic math calculations, as well as the calculation of averages, percentages and basic algebraic equations
  • Member of the California State bar in good standing
  • Juris Doctorate
  • Valid driver's license
