Overview: The Staff Engineer, Release will be responsible for design, implementation and mentoring onshore/offshore resources to maintain a distributed version control system and code progression model used by several hundred geographically distributed developers. With the Release Automation team, the Staff Engineer will also be responsible for the architecture, implementation, maintenance and the continued enhancement of the rest of Macy’s eCommerce release pipeline. The Release Engineering team is embarking on an exciting transformation of the Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s eCommerce release pipeline. This will give the Staff Engineer, Release an opportunity to work with cutting edge design and technologies, and in close collaboration with project and release management, change management, quality assurance, production support, database and enterprise services teams. Key Accountabilities: Version Control system (VCS) ownership, including: Migration from centralized VCS (SVN) to distributed VCS (Git) Automated progression model based on code analysis and test automation thresholds Provide support and training to Dev users Architect, implement and support existing and new automation solutions for release tasks, including: Build Scripted enterprise cloud environments Application deployment Application assets management Database change Integration into version control, project and incident management tooling Mentor onshore and offshore Release Automation teams to achieve a 24/7 development and support model. Skills Summary: Self-starter with a very strong penchant for test driven automation. Strong release tooling and operations architecture background. In-depth understanding of the principles and best practices of Software Configuration Management, Agile methodology, DevOps philosophy and Continuous Integration. Strong aptitude for efficient cutting edge solutions for long standing problems. Experience working with rapid, overlapping project cycles and shifting priorities. Experience working in cross-functional, multi-location teams. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Willingness to work evenings and weekends in support as required. Required Technical Skills: BA/BS degree with 5 years of experience or Masters and 3 years of experience. 5+ years in the design, implementation and administration of an enterprise version control system with at least 2 years in distributed VCS, including Migration from a centralized to distributed VCS Git experience strongly preferred 6+ years in the design and implementation of a software release pipeline, including Building J2EE based applications using Maven Deploying database changes Setting up Continuous Integration (Hudson / Jenkins strongly preferred) eCommerce experience preferred 3+ years using environment configuration tools (e.g. Chef, Puppet, etc.) 2+ years Hands on test driven application design and programming experience. 2+ years Hands on experience working with relational databases (e.g. Oracle, DB2, etc.) Desirable Technical Skills: Experience working with web server technologies (e.g. WebSphere, JBoss, Web Logic) Experience with EDD tooling (e.g. Liquibase, DBMaintain, etc.) Experience integrating ALM toolsets. Enterprise UNIX/Linux system administration. Experience implementing or using Continuous Delivery methodologies. Experience with cloud Platform as a Service (PaaS) Retail industry experience. Soft Skills: Ability to drive projects to fruition under minimum supervision. Excellent customer service attitude, communication skills (written and verbal), and interpersonal skills. Patience and perseverance in following best practices for process improvements. Ability to plan long-term, but execute goals in tangible short-term incrementals. Ability to work under pressure and in high stress situations with a calm demeanor.
