Pacific Biosciences is seeking a disciplined mechanical engineer with experience designing complex, high-volume cross-functional instrumentation. The DNA sequencing market that Pacific Biosciences is competing in requires continual development of novel concepts that can be proven and transitioned to a manufacturing environment. The candidate will be responsible for creating and developing these new concepts for our existing and upcoming products. The ideal candidate is knowledgeable in instrument definition, design, testing, and troubleshooting. A strong work ethic and commitment to solid documentation practices are a must. Work is fast paced and multifaceted, touching on many additional engineering disciplines: thermal, chemical/biological, optical, electrical, structural, and software. The perfect candidate will be comfortable shifting priorities quickly and getting hands-on to diagnose and solve technical issues. They must be comfortable working closely with others and giving/receiving constructive design feedback.
The candidate will be responsible for working on and leading cross-functional teams to gather requirements, define specifications, diagnose issues, develop and test concepts, then execute on designs with input from many functional groups. The primary focus of the role is on the instrument chassis design, although there will be many oportunities to work on many other areas of the system as well. This role will provide support to manufacturing, field service, and internal users and to improve reliability, manufacturability, and serviceability of our current and future products.
B.S. or more advanced degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
7+ years industry experience
Experience with weldedments and frame/chassis design required
Experience with vibration mitigation and analysis required
Experience following strict product development processes required
Experience leading small teams, including external vendors such as industrial designers, strongly desired
Advanced understanding of volume production of complex instrumentation strongly desired
Experience with plastic part design and injection molding a plus
Broad instrumentation experience, including optics, thermals, vibration, fluidics, robotics, automation, or packaging, a plus
Basic software scripting experience a plus
Proficient in good documentation practices
Strong communication skills, including sharing and accepting ideas with many sources
Capable of operating autonomously and disciplined enough to follow established best practices and guidelines
Proficiency in Solidworks or equivalent 3D modeling experience
Drafting experience using ASME Y14.5-2009
Machine Shop experience preferred
