This position is located in Avery County, at Avery Mitchell Correctional Institution. This position will work at a Medium Custody Adult Male Facility with an inmate population of 865. This position provides specialized nursing & medical treatment to patients by developing nursing care plans, independently carrying out the nursing care process, & assisting patients in maximizing recover functions. Individuals in this level may also be responsible for serving as a “Charge Nurse” overseeing the daily nursing care activities on an assigned shift for an assigned area or in the preceptor role, coordinating all licensed and non-licensed staff. Individuals may be required to work all shifts, weekends, & holidays with limited supervision.
Direct care for inmates.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:
Knowledge of basic nursing principles & techniques, unit organization & standard operating procedures with the ability to be a team leader. Ability to provide patient & family information, per Departmental Guidelines, & provide oversight regarding patient care to nursing staff. Critical Thinking – Can independently implement the nursing process, basing judgments on facts & reasoning, & systematically meeting patient needs. Client/Customer Service – Must have professional, caring approach in dealing with patients & families, & effectively delivering services in an organized & timely manner. Coaching/Mentoring – Ability to orient, precept & provide on-the-job training for nursing staff. Effective communication skills with inmates, family members, staff, facility management & medical professionals- presenting clear, concise information, in a form which is understood; listens & responds appropriately.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Licensed to practice as a registered nurse in the state of North Carolina.
