Position Summary

Reporting directly to the Vice President for Economic Development, in collaboration with the Dean of the School of Business, this position is responsible for managing all CTSBDC staff and program services including outreach, facilitation, delivery, logistics, achieving program goals/compliance and client satisfaction.

Specifically this position:

- Is responsible for the work of the SBDC and sub centers, and develops business plans in support of the mission and to provide for fiscal solvency; creates and maintains a strategic multi-year organizational plan to meet the needs and goals of the CTSBDC

- Ensures the delivery of services to clients including comprehensive consulting services, training and other programs for businesses within the state

- Acts independently within the goals and objectives of the CTSBDC as established by the VP for Economic Development and will have responsibility for all personnel decisions, including staffing, hiring, firing, evaluation, promotion and training, program design, goals, financial control and accountability

- Creates a strategic plan for the CTSBDC with attainable metrics for the first 6 months, one year and two years

- Develops sponsorships and corporate relations to ensure long term sustainability of the Center; supports fund raising efforts through sponsorships and programs for the SBDC to ensure financial sustainability

- Develops new educational products and enhancement of pedagogy for business start-ups and sustainability

- Promotes the CTSBDC though the design, development and implementation of marketing programs

- Acts as a liaison with business and industry, legislators, government officials and others to promote CTSBDC as a regional business resource

- Represents the CTSBDC to external parties within and outside of the state as needed

- Oversees marketing of new projects and recruits new businesses into the SBDC network

- Oversees the programmatic and fiscal operations of the unit

- Keeps informed of general business conditions and changes in regulations/laws affecting small business

- Ensures CTSBDC is in compliance with all federal and state mandates including accreditation standards

- Attends annual ASBDC conference, completes relevant training programs and maintains all certifications as directed or required

- Identifies and creates systems and structure that will strengthen the evaluation and impact of SBDC programs

- Leads the client satisfaction review process and oversees changes as necessary for improvement

- Convenes and maintains an active advisory council to support the CTSBDC

- Performs related duties as required


Minimum Qualifications:

1. MBA, MPA or advanced degree from an accredited institution focusing on business, management or economics

2. At least five years of relevant experience which must include program AND staff management experience

3. Knowledge of federal, state and local business development issues

4. Ability to develop and manage operating budgets and resources, and forecast revenues and expenses

5. Excellent communication and presentation skills

6. Sensitivity to the needs of a diverse client base

7. Ability to work flexible hours and travel

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Knowledge of management procedures in higher education

2. Previous experience with SBDC or SBA programs

3. Experience running a small business

4. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of people and organizations, entrepreneurial and large business, government, university, and community in order to achieve organizational goals

5. Proven experience in building and maintaining a broad spectrum of partnerships

6. Working knowledge of computer software programs including spreadsheets and database management, as well as skill utilizing all forms of wireless devices to enhance work productivity

7. Ability to organize and manage multiple projects

8. Ability to deal effectively with the public and maintain high levels of confidentiality

9. Ability to comply with federal, state and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations

10. Ability to communicate effectively and manage personnel of various backgrounds and skill sets

Appointment Terms

This is a full-time, management-exempt position. Salary will be commensurate with experience and skills.
