The State and Local Government Affairs Coordinator will assist the Senior Director in tracking legislation and ballot initiatives, documenting best practices, strengthening Americans for the Arts’ State Arts Action Network (SAAN) and promoting state and local public policies that advance the arts and arts education in America. The Coordinator will assist the Senior Director in managing and growing a network of member statewide arts and arts education advocacy organizations through professional development opportunities, peer-to-peer networking, and technology. The Coordinator will also work to implement a state and local arts education advocacy program. The Coordinator must have strong experiences in government affairs and advocacy, writing, a working knowledge of association or network management and online advocacy software (examples: VoterVoice, Capwiz, etc).


Support State Arts Action Network (SAAN)
  • Support SAAN, a national network of statewide arts advocacy and service organizations
  • Provide support in planning and producing SAAN meetings
  • Organize quarterly SAAN Professional Development sessions and monthly member led conference calls
  • Organize marketing materials, monthly trainings and provide technical assistance for state and local members using web based legislative advocacy software (examples: VoterVoice, Capwiz, etc)

State and Local Policy Development
  • Track state and local legislation of interest to members and distribute information online and via listervs.
  • Track state and local election events, candidate forums, and ballots measures impacting the arts and communicate trends
  • Coordinate planning of various partner events with the national associations representing state and local government elected leaders
  • Participate with state arts leaders at state arts advocacy conferences, as budget allows
  • Assist with various state and local arts research projects such as the annual SAAN member survey, and speaker/meeting topic surveys.
  • Works with the Local Arts Advancement Department to disseminate local policy development, trends and initiatives to the field.

Arts Education
  • Track education policies at the state and local level that are relevant to arts education and share this information with advocacy networks
  • Provide customized technical assistance to state leaders working to affect state policy for arts education
  • Collect research/data on the status and condition of arts education at the state level

  • Produce online edition of the SAANBox, Monthly Wire and ArtsWatch policy newsletter
  • Develop content and regularly update Americans for the Arts’ web pages regarding SAAN, state legislation and arts policy news
  • Manage editorial process of quarterly Arts Action Fund Newsletter
  • Serve as department liaison for organization communications

  • Execute other projects and assignments given by the Senior Director of State and Local Government Affairs

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least three years of prior government affairs or association work (note: work experience credit given for graduate studies)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; project management and organizational skills
  • Good attention to detail
  • Experience with advocacy software products
  • Some travel required
  • Strong computer skills
  • Strong interest in legislative and political issues
  • Commitment to schedules, deadlines, and high quality of work
  • A positive attitude and an earnest interest in providing good customer service to our members and partners
  • A commitment to advancing the arts in America
