The City of Salem is searching for several students for summer work as a crewmember on multiple projects, conducting work in and along local waterways. Work is typically performed outdoors in all types of weather.


POSITION DESCRIPTION: The City of Salem is seeking students for summer work (anticipated June - September) on project:

Stream Cleaning: Crewmembers will walk approximately 50 miles of Salem’s waterways to remove trash, debris, and invasive plant materials that restrict conveyance and impact water quality. This is physically demanding work performed outdoors in all types of weather. Primary duties include: cutting and removing brush; removing non-habitat material and trash from streams; and completion of a restoration project.

Performs related work as required. Will coordinate activities with variety of City departments, employees, and/or public and private agencies.

Additional duties may include: conducting research projects; preparing reports or data summaries; and conducting presentations.


Candidates must have current standing as a graduate or undergraduate student with major course work in environmental studies, natural resources, geography, geology or a related natural resources field. Proof of enrollment will be requested.


Requires the ability to move safely over rough terrain in waders; must be able to lift and carry 40 pounds, work safely and effectively with hand tools, shovels, rakes, pruning shears, weed eaters, and chain saws; work cooperatively as a team member; follow directions; be punctual and be a self-starter. May operate a motor vehicle requiring an Oregon Class C driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.


Work is performed in a field setting. Requires walking for extended periods of time on uneven surfaces in all types of weather. Requires walking in and near streams while carrying debris, and loading debris into vehicles. Will be exposed to a variety of environmental hazards such as poison oak, nettles, blackberry bushes, insect bites, bees, etc. Work will require the use of hip waders and life preservers. Must demonstrate the ability to work safely and effectively with a variety of hand tools. Crewmembers will frequently interact with other City staff, residents, and property owners about daily crew activities
