Position Title: Student Elementary Reading Tutor

Student employees must maintain enrollment of six (6) NMC credits during fall and spring semesters, and a minimum of three (3) NMC credit during summer semester to be eligible for student employment.

SUMMARY

The Student Elementary Reading Tutor works with children in elementary or preschools to help improve their reading skills. This person must be able to work at an assigned elementary school campus and provide own transportation to and from the school. This is a nation-wide program funded by the Federal Government. Students must either be eligible to receive financial aid or be willing to volunteer for this position. A higher wage is provided to offset transportation costs. Elementary Reading Tutors must abide by the dress code provided by the school. This student will work as a team member to help students with critical learning skills. This individual will be punctual, demonstrate a positive attitude, and serve as a role model to elementary aged students.

You can participate in the initiative to help children improve their reading skills in one of two ways:

1. If you are eligible for financial aid, you may initially be awarded Federal Work-Study funds to earn $10.00 per hour for tutoring. These tutoring hours may be your sole work-study job or they may be hours you work in addition to your regular on-campus work-study job. Even if you have only a couple of hours per week available in your time schedule, the school can use you.

2. If you are not eligible for financial aid, you may choose to volunteer your time at a local school.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATES and LICENSES

Required:
Student must be enrolled half time during that semester (minimum NMC academic credits: 6 for fall; 6 for spring; 3 for summer).

One semester commitment to work required, two or more semesters preferred

Students who wish to volunteer for this position must be enrolled at NMC, with no minimum credits requirements.

Valid, unrestricted Michigan Driver’s License

Fluent reading ability

Able to build rapport with children

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

None.

WORK HOURS :
This is a part-time, NMC student position. This individual will work 2 to 4 hours per week.
