The Student Services Advisor will facilitate the well-being and integration of international students in our community during the course of their participation in WWU's Extended Education Language & Culture Programs (LCP), as well as handling general office duties for all Extended Education programs. The advisor predominantly manages student activities and issues such as (but not limited to) academic and personal advising, admissions, attendance, grade-tracking, housing and dining services, orientation, registration, student accounts, and access to university resources. The position reports to the Student and Course Services Director.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Provide clear communication with students, staff and faculty re: Extended Education programs, Language and Culture Programs (LCP), as well as university policies and procedures
  • Facilitate international student integration into the Bellingham and Western communities
  • Prepare materials and presentations for a wide variety of student orientations/workshops
  • Academic Advising re: admissions, academic programs of study and progress, and attendance
  • Personal Advising such as: banking, cell phone service, childcare, employment, healthcare, insurance, housing, transportation, travel visas, and student emergencies (ex: on-call)
  • Work with LCP in program development, event scheduling and e-News
  • Develop, coordinate and lead student activities, events, and excursions, which can include driving; this includes preparation of program materials, working with university and non-university vendors for delivery of services, and working with individuals and businesses who interact with the Language and Cultural Programs (LCP) and Extended Education
  • Assist with non-traditional student registration, registration systems and data-base tracking
  • Interpret policies & procedures for persons with questions concerning university and Extended Education programs; including basic questions re: SEVIS and Visa policies, especially F-1 Visa
  • Recruit, train and coordinate student employees for activities, events and excursions
  • Set up student employees (and other drivers) with Van Safety Training, ensure compliance with safety policies, and coordinate for student pickups at the Bellingham airport, bus or train
  • Liaison between Extended Ed and other areas (ex: Health Center, Viking Union, Outdoor Center)
  • Assist instructors and directors with special requests (ex: scheduling, testing students)
  • Extended Education centralized support and other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Education in Communications, TESOL, Linguistics, a second language, or a related field of study
  • Professional experience delivering student advising services
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, flexibility and proven ability to quickly process and prioritize expectations for support with minimal supervision
  • Experience working with international or other diverse student populations
  • Ability to work effectively in a culturally diverse environment
  • Team player, able to shift gears and help team members due to shifting priorities
  • Competency with Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and database software
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive as required by the position responsibilities, including ability to comply with Washington State’s Basic Driver Safety Program
  • Ability to lift tables, chairs and other equipment up to 30 pounds

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Professional student advising experience in higher education
  • Professional experience working with ESL students
  • Second language proficiency (oral/written) – Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, or Korean preferred
  • Experience developing and using social media modules for international student recruitment
  • MOS Certification
