Student Intern Program: This position is being filled under the new Pathways - Internship Program which provide opportunities for high school, vocational and technical, undergraduate, graduate, and professional students to be exposed to the work of the Federal government.
Student Definition: Students must be accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc,) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled) throughout the duration of the appointment, including awardees of the Harry S. Truman Foundation Scholarship Program under Public Law 93-842.
Position Duration/Expectation: Positions will be temporary not-to-exceed 1 year. May be extended in up to 1 year increments based on continued need/funds for the position and the student's continued compliance in the Intern Program. Typical duties include:
- Providing reference service by searching for, re-filing, or inter-filing records in simple or self-indexing filing systems. Correct locations are provided, specific information is requested, locations are concentrated and alternate actions are not routinely required. As instructed, searches for information in designated portions of the records, searching for specific, readily available information in answer to requests of a recurring nature. Obtaining specific records for the use of higher grade employees, or for the use of others requesting the service, assists in the surveillance of records while in research use to see that they are being used properly, and returns them to the appropriate storage areas.
- P erforming duties related to office administration or reception functions. Such duties include records/case assembly, data entry, and records copying. Operating a photocopier in producing copies from originals; assembles, staples, and distributes completed photocopy work as directed. Affixing seals on copies as required. Answering the section telephone, as required. D ocumenting requests for records or information, posting requests to control logs and/or relaying messages to section and/or unit personnel. Entering data in prescribed format into case management system or other tracking log. Typing a variety of correspondence, forms and other materials from handwritten drafts and/or verbal instructions. Sorting and distributing incoming mail and priority work.
- Greeting visitors, answering phones and directing calls to the appropriate staff person, as necessary.

The first part of the interview process for this position requires candidates to pass a physical ability test designed to measure candidates' ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. The test requires carrying 30-pounds boxes like those found on the job. It also requires bending, squatting, and walking to reach the boxes in addition to climbing and balancing on a pulpit ladder up to 15 feet high.
