Salem District has multiple openings for the Transportation Maintenance Supervisor position in Bedford and Franklin Counties in Bedford Residency. This position is responsible for providing day-to-day supervision to work crews performing maintenance and construction activities on roadways and surrounding rights of way. Will assist with development of local area schedules, budgets, and work priorities. Manage the area's emergency operations and safety programs to include work zone traffic controls and set-up. Develop and monitor individual training programs and conduct performance evaluations. Interpret and explain policies and procedures. Monitor inventory levels and complete paperwork and reports. Investigate and respond to customer concerns and issues. This position is a working supervisor that operates equipment and performs heavy manual labor. Emergency response during snow/severe weather events and other emergency events is a critical responsibility of this position.

Considerable knowledge of roadway maintenance and construction practices and procedures. Knowledge of inventory and budget practices and procedures. Skill in operating and maintaining light to heavy trucks and equipment. Skilled in the use of computers and software applications. Ability to supervise, train, and evaluate personnel. Ability to plan, prioritize, and make job assignments; read and interpret road and bridge plans and sketches. Knowledge of safety and supervisory principles and practices including ability to document disciplinary discussions. Ability to communicate effectively and interact successfully with coworkers, managers, and internal and external customers. Ability to complete reports and records using basic English and Math skills. Valid driver's license and Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
Ability to obtain DCR Erosion & Sediment Control Inspector Certification within 6 months of employment. Experience supervising others and evaluating performance. Experience overseeing emergency operations including snow removal, storm damage, and accident clean-up. CDL endorsements.
Special Requirements: Ability to perform heavy manual labor to include standing, bending, and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. Will be required to attend NIMS training courses. Fingerprint based background check required. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a DMV records check conducted by the Agency, and a Valid Driver's License Required. This position is designated as essential and as such, all duties associated with this position are required during emergency situations, which may include, but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response, and emergency operations. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required.
