The Certified Surgical Technicians are an integral part of the surgical team providing surgical care to patients in a variety of settings. They perform various tasks to provide technical support during pre-, intra- and postoperative phase of surgical procedures. The certified surgical technicians ensure the operating room environment is safe, equipment functions properly, and operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Surgical technicians possess expertise in theory and application of sterile and aseptic techniques, while combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures and tools to facilitate surgeons’ performance.
•Assists in preparing patients for surgery, sets-up surgical equipment prior to surgery, and prepares, positions, and preps the patient on the O.R. table.
•Assists with cleaning the O.R. rooms in preparation for subsequent surgical procedures.
•Assists the surgeon in surgery by passing instruments, draping sterile field, and may serve as first or second assistant during any surgical procedure.
•Performs appropriate pre- and post-surgical counts with circulating nurse, maintains sterile techniques, recognizes breaks in technique, and takes steps to regain sterility.
•Organizes sterile table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, medication, and solutions needed for surgical procedures.
•May assist with special assignments and work with nurse and Educator to provide clinical experience and instruction for student programs, and may provide written and verbal evaluations of student performance.
•May transport patients or specimens as necessary.
•Provides care and/or service to patient undergoing surgical intervention without regard to age, race, or gender.
