About This Position
Reporting to the VP of IT and Operations, the Systems Administration Manager will have both strategic and tactical responsibilities for the architecture and ongoing maintenance of the Linux server and dev ops environments. Specific responsibilities include:
Working collaboratively with executive leaders and peer managers within development, sales, marketing, customer and technical support, architect, implement, maintain and support a server environment with nearly perfect uptime to meet SLAs and internal requirements.
Provide day-to-day management of software development team, serving as mentor to individual contributors including on-going performance evaluation as well as screening and hiring new personnel.
Currently the team is responsible for:
Configure Nginx, Varnish, memcache, Apache, MySQL
Design, implement, grow and monitor a high availability server/database environment
Optimize MySQL server configurations, failover, replication, sharding
Perform server package upgrades
Write scripts to do repetitive tasks; Automation is key
Implement IPTable firewall rules
Manage a secure SFTP,SSH jailed environment for thousands of users
Diagnose individual WP site performance issues
Monitor CPU load, memory usage and be able to identify server break points
Under leadership of VP of IT and Operations, set priorities and advance projects from development through implementation, including staffing requirements, work plans, reporting, timelines, milestones and quality standards
Our ideal candidate can remote control a website requiring cookie-based authentication using bash and curl and prefers to compile from source anyway. Other specific qualifications for this position include:
10+ years of system administration experience to include at least 3 years in a technical leadership role
Demonstrable experience in at least one OS, we use Ubuntu, but if you're proficient in one (Redhat Enterprise, CentOS, FedoraCore, etc.) or multiple it's just a matter of finding the equivalent command
Solid experience installing, configuring, and maintaining services such as Apache, MySQL, NGINX, PHP-CGI, Varnish, memcached, HAProxy, iptables
Must be comfortable using common open source apps like MRTG, Git, and AppArmor.
NFS Experience and strong familiarity with DNS. Must configure in general regardless of tool (be it BIND, Unbound, etc.)
Knowledge or UNIX/Linux shell scripting
Experience with TCP/IP networking
Knowledge of Perl programming
Experience in custom compiling kernels and adding kernel modules
Configuration management (Puppet, Chef, CF Engine, etc.)
WordPress experience is a major plus, but at least an infatuation, that could grow into love, is required
Excellent troubleshooting and diagnostics skills in order to recognize a problem and know how to respond while taking a creative approach to solving problems quickly
Possess ability to multitask and thrive in a dynamic, small company, start up environment
