Job Introduction

Administration of the Local Area Network to maintain, upgrade, and provide user support for all users of the MSSE desktop and laptop computers.

Major Responsibilities

Updates the Network Operating System, maintaining the current Network Operating System patches and updates.

LAN and workstation backup including scheduling of backups, restores, tape storage, tape purchasing, offsite storage, and backup verification.

Controls print queues and the directory structure.

Maintains security and disk space allocations.

Maintains accurate inventory records by tracking hardware/software and updating the inventory system when necessary.

Maintains and repair, in conjunction with contract service vendor, all PC hardware and peripherals in the facility.

Coordinates new workstation installations including unpacking, loading, configuring and setting up new equipment.

Coordinates projects relating to the LAN including but not limited to, OS changes and upgrades, new network technologies, enhanced NOS features and platform upgrades.

Provides assistance to users relating to new and existing hardware.

Provides assistance to users relating to software, including use of existing software and evaluation of new software applications.

Provides assistance to users relating to the Local Area Network including login procedures, network management software, printing issues and security.

Upgrades and install software onto existing workstations as needed.

Adds/modifies/deletes users as needed.

Procures supplies for system users (i.e. floppies, tapes, manuals, paper, etc.), as needed

Provides for user training on software and hardware products, as needed.

Provides back up to Help Desk Specialist, answering calls, logging information, resolving issues, generating reports and maintaining the software as needed.

Authorities as detailed in Standard Operating Procedure 8000.

Knowledge and Education


Bachelor Degree in Computer Science or a High School degree or GED with an additional three years of PC administration experience.

Work Experience

Experience/Special Knowledge/Skills

Minimum 3 years in PC and LAN System Administration.

Minimum 3 years of CAD Systems Administration

Experience with PC based desktop and laptop hardware, operating systems including Windows95 and DOS, operating system configuration, printer setup, network interface, loading and configuring software, and troubleshooting hardware and software.

Work Environment

Physical Demands/Work Environment

Normal amount of sitting or standing, average mobility to move around an office environment, able to conduct normal amount of work at a computer, may require travel. Ability to lift objects weighing up to 35 lbs.
