The Systems Engineer role is to optimize Windows and Linux servers and related components to achieve high availability and performance of the various business applications supported. This includes installing, configuring, administering, and fine-tuning Windows and Linux RHEL operating systems and components across the organization in a timely and efficient manner.
The Systems Engineer's role will ensure the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of the in-house information systems that support core organizational functions. This is achieved by monitoring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all networked software and associated Windows and Linux based operating systems. The Systems Engineer will apply proven communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills to help identify, communicate, and resolve issues in order to maximize the benefit of IT systems investments.
Participate in key process improvements for all Windows / Linux environments throughout the organization.
Participate in the design and review of new Windows / Linux systems and Windows and Linux application deployments in both workstations and servers.
Participate with network engineering, IP Telephony, business application, and database administration functions to ensure availability, reliability, and scalability of Windows and Linux to meet corporate objectives.
Perform file system and database configuration and management.
Support application development teams throughout project lifecycles.
Troubleshoot and resolve hardware and software problems, including enterprise data servers, network appliances and IP telephony systems.
Ensure that Windows and Linux based workstations and servers comply with established policies, standards, licensing agreements, and configuration guidelines.
Define and perform system backups and recovery procedures to ensure full data retrieval.
Monitor and test system performance; provide statistics and reports.
Implement strategies for integrating Windows and non-Windows operating environments.
Recommend and execute modifications to Windows / Linux systems in order to improve efficiency, reliability, and performance.
Follow policies, procedures, and technologies (including firewalls) to ensure Windows / Linux system security.
Conduct research on Windows / Linux-related hardware, network hardware and software in support of procurement and system development efforts.
Assist in the deployment of Windows / Linux service packs, hot fixes, system updates, and vendor-supplied patches according to best practices.
Develop and maintain Windows training materials and systems documentation.
Ensure the stability and performance of Microsoft Active Directory.
Add/Delete/Change DNS entries in all internal and external corporate domains.
Participate in the design, implementation and monitoring of VMware ESX clusters. Ongoing research and training for self-improvement to better support the environment.
Proficient with all Windows Server operating systems (2000,2003,2008)
Proficient with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
Understands System Monitoring tools (SolarWinds, Big Brother, ITCAM, HP OpenView, etc.)
Proficient at writing System documentation
Experienced with VMware vSphere infrastructure
Experienced in Active Directory and Microsoft environments
Hands on experience with server hardware
Installation of operating systems- Windows Server and Red Hat
General understanding of Networking and SAN architecture
Familiarity with DNS and TCP/IP networking
