Job Description

The Technical Director reports in a line capacity to the Medical Director of MGPO Dermatopathology Associates, functionally responsible for administrative and technical management of a new, state-of-the-art laboratory at 2 Wells Avenue, Newton, MA. Responsible for the following areas: budget, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance.

Staffing includes 4 FTEs, with significant growth potential, and an Outreach Operating budget of approximately $3.5M. Laboratory staffing includes registration, accessioning, grossing, and histotechnicians. Laboratory operations include three shifts to achieve 24 hour turn-around-time service and oversees the workflow in all areas; hires, counsels and works with Human Resources to resolve issues in the laboratory.

Job Duties:

Works in collaboration with the Medical Director and communicates effectively with the staff and leadership of the MGPODA (including but not limited to the Medical Director, Administrative Director) regarding all aspects of the laboratory management:

People Management:
  • Effectively screens, interview, check reference, select and hire staff that have appropriate education, skills and talents to fill available positions
  • Effectively, fairly, and timely evaluate the performance of staff and provide feedback

  • Directs/supervises and when needed perform the technical activities in accessioning, specimen processing, histology, immunohistochemistry and special stains
  • Direct/supervises and maintains an effective orientation, training and competency program (new employee, new skill, new technology, cross training)
  • Staffs the laboratory with the appropriate personnel to support and accomplish goals and objectives of the laboratory and in compliance with regulatory requirements:
  • Assigns work to and assures that prescribed technical procedures are followed in the processing area
  • authorizes and processes status changes, leaves of absence, paid time off in the form of Earned Time
  • Delegates effectively

Process Management:
  • Identify, collect and analyze appropriate measures to track processes and that monitor quality and quantity of work performed in the laboratory
  • Set and maintain service, quality, safety and productivity standards
  • Establish and enforces safety regulations for the laboratory to ensure that personnel receive maximum protection from hazardous laboratory materials and infectious agents
  • Assures that all procedures are followed regarding the proper labeling and filing of blocks and slides and recording of work performance
  • In consultation with the Medical Director, periodically writes, reviews and revises laboratory procedures in order to improve quality and productivity
  • Validates method and equipment performance
  • Recommends new techniques and methods to the Medical Director and introduce new procedures regarding acquisition of new equipment, or modification and repair of old equipment
  • Thoroughly investigate and respond to safety reports, accidents, errors, or reports of quality concerns and when indicated conduct root cause analysis and PDCA methodology for process improvement
  • Optimize staffing scheduling, supply, space and other resources
  • Write and maintain policies and procedures and maintains document control meeting all applicable regulatory standards
  • Ensures that adequate stock levels of required laboratory supplies are maintained;
  • Develops and implements a program of planned maintenance for all laboratory equipment
  • Interfaces with sales and field representatives as necessary

Communications Management:
  • Communicates routinely regarding daily operations in order to resolve issues, problems or obtain/furnish information
  • Create opportunities to constructively receive and respond to feedback from employees, patients, leadership and vendors
  • Develop appropriate strategies to respond to feedback from employees, patients, leadership and vendors
  • Use and apply information systems and software effectively
  • Effectively communicate with others using appropriate format and ensure information is correctly received
  • Create and maintain a safe culture

Financial Management:
  • Effectively utilize the purchasing and accounts payable processes
  • Understand and apply the MGH and Partners accounting rules (travel expenses, gifts, and business expenses)
  • Effectively collect financial information to analyze current or propose activities
  • Analyze contract proposals and maintain contract compliance
  • Interpret and monitor budget performance using available tools
  • Interpret cost center financial performance
  • Perform a cost benefit or TOI analysis
  • Prepare and analyze a request for proposal
  • Prepares the budget which includes proposals for new equipment, supplies, service contracts and other needs, and submits the budget proposal to the Administrative Director

Leadership:
  • Attends and participates in meetings and committees as directed (including and not limited to MGPODA Quality Committee)
  • Effectively run meetings to maintain communications with subordinates relative to policy, practices and procedures
  • Use an effective decision-making process

Requirements:
  • Knowledge of routine and specialized techniques in histopathology including immunohistochemistry
  • Knowledge of Universal Precautions; Chemical Hygiene Plan and other regulatory issues
  • Knowledge of management of Human Resources
  • Knowledge of financial and budgetary issues as related to the operation of the histology laboratories
  • Must be able to read /write English effectively; communicate with all levels
  • Must have good computer skills and be knowledgeable about Excel, Word, LIS systems and document management (Knowledge of CoPath, and Microsoft Office plus)

SKILLS:
  • Leadership skills to take charge, set direction, organize, encourage, and motivate others to meet goals of laboratory

  • Communication skills that are effective, tactful, diplomatic, clear and concise in both written and verbal format
  • Ability to write technical and clerical procedures

  • Must have manual dexterity and motor coordination
Registration / certification as a HT or HTL(ASCP) is required.

BS degree required, preferably in medical laboratory science

Ten years of experience, three to five of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
