The Talk on the Wild Side Internship is a Temporary, Part-Time position, approximately 32 hours per week, the exact days to be determined, from June 1 through Aug 18, 2013, decreasing to 22.5 hours per week from August 19 through September 4, 2013.
Note: Must be willing to work weekends and some overtime.
Talk On the Wild Side! is an interpretive volunteer program for 14-17 year olds designed to help increase the Zoo's contact with the public using the Insect Zoo, Children's Zoo, and bio-fact carts. The teen volunteers are scheduled to come to the Zoo two days per week, 10-4:30, and are stationed in different areas of the Zoo in order to teach the visiting public. The teens use some live animals, along with themed carts that have pelts, claws, bones and other bio-facts to teach people about animal physiology, anatomy and conservation issues impacting animals.
The goal of this internship is to learn and successfully perform (under supervision) the duties and responsibilities of a Zoo employee in the Education Department, which include the following:
Scheduling and assigning the daily schedule for the teen volunteers.
Participating in the ongoing training of teen volunteers.
Ensure that teen volunteers get to their assigned posts throughout the day.
Monitoring each group throughout the day to ensure proper behavior and correcting improper behavior.
Entering data and volunteer hours in the database.
Assisting in other areas where needed.
Some interaction with animals in the Insect Zoo and Children's Zoo.
Interacting with Zoo guests courteously at all times.
QUALIFICATIONS : College level coursework in biology, zoology, ecology, education or related area, ability to present information to groups and experience working with teenagers.

EDUCATION: High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
