The Technical Assistant Editor provides key editorial and administrative support for all projects within the Stitch brand, including: Stitch and Stitch Gifts magazines; special issues;; freemiums; downloadable patterns; pattern inserts; digital issues; and related projects as directed, including videos. Works closely with editor and assistant editor to help manage flow of projects from inception through layout and production. Technical editing responsibilities include ensuring technical accuracy of instructions, illustrations, and patterns for all projects within the Stitch brand, and for special issues within the quilting category. Contributes to magazine content by writing and editing assigned pieces, researching, fact-checking, proofreading, handling photo releases and photo credits, and managing the flow of shipping and receiving related artwork and editorial materials. Assists in developing concepts for submission calls, and photo shoot planning and coordination. Works collaboratively within and across teams to meet editorial and market group objectives.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Work closely with editor and assistant editor to manage all administrative duties related to the successful and timely development of Stitch editorial and online products.

As directed, assist with managing material flow for each issue through freelance contributors, freelance editors, illustrator, editorial, design, and production.

Ensure that key deadlines are met.

Handle technical editing for all projects in Stitch and related products, and for special issues in the quilting category as directed. Ensure technical accuracy of all projects.

As directed by editor, research, write, edit, and manage departments within each issue. Develop the departments as a vital element of the magazine’s total presentation.

Procure and update all relevant resources.

Assist editor and assistant editor in sourcing products for review.

Assist with coordination of in-house photography for each issue’s departments and features.

Assist editor and design team in planning and managing location photo shoots.

Edit, fact-check, and proofread each issue.

Review content and ensure technical accuracy and factual accuracy at each stage of the editorial process and through the layout and production stages.

Maintain editorial process guidelines and style guides.

As directed, assist editor in researching and developing issue content and submission calls.

Be knowledgeable about market trends and the relevant communities online. As directed, contribute to the Sew Daily blog and other social media efforts, including participating in new web initiatives as determined.

Handle administrative tasks relevant to the assigned projects.

Knowledge & Skills Required

Project management skills : High attention to detail. Strong follow-through to meet tight deadlines.

Editorial skills: Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Knowledge of all stages of magazine development. Ability to edit and write quickly and efficiently. Obsession with accuracy. Experience in fact checking preferred. Knowledge of SEO and digital initiatives a plus.

Technical expertise : Knowledge of sewing techniques, including garment construction. Exceptional mathematical skills. Unwavering commitment to accuracy.

Subject matter knowledge : Knowledge of sewing and technical aspects of sewing required. Up-to-date content knowledge specific to market group. Comprehensive knowledge of resources for information.

Market knowledge: Awareness of current market trends and leaders in the sewing/fashion industries.

Planning & Organization: Ability to multitask effectively and manage overlapping projects. Determines priorities and allocates time and resources efficiently. Maintains high level of organization. Ability to work independently without supervision.

Communication skills : Ability to develop and maintain open communication with key internal and external clients.

Education and/or experience: Must have publishing experience (professional and/or educational). BA/MA in journalism, English, or subject-matter related field preferred. Photo shoot experience preferred.

Teamwork: Works collaboratively toward solutions that benefit all parties to accomplish Interweave objectives.

Software : Accomplished in MS Word and Outlook. Experience with Adobe Photoshop and InDesign preferred. Experience with blog and newsletter software a plus.

Other requirements: High level of attention to detail. Ability to work quickly and efficiently in a fast-paced environment. People person who is able to work in a team environment, yet be a self-starter and an independent worker. Light travel may be required.
