The training systems include large scale mechanical devices, support assemblies, electrical and optical routing, real-time embedded subsystems and software driven devices. Technical Designers support development from proposals and requirements development, through design and design verification, all the way through manufacturing, integration, and test / installation of the product to manufacturing facilities. Mechanical design responsibilities include translation of requirements into hardware concepts, layouts, and designs, application of best practices such as Design for Manufacturing and Assembly, structural and thermal analyses, and production release of drawings and design databases. People in this position must have a working knowledge of Unigraphics. Domestic and foreign travel may be required.
Competencies
General
[ + ] Managing Work
Consistently identifies highly critical and less critical activities and tasks amidst a large number of competing demands; adjusts priorities when appropriate. Consistently ensures that required equipment and/or materials are in appropriate locations so that own and others' work can be done effectively. Effectively allocates own time to complete work; coordinates own and others' schedules to avoid conflicts. Consistently takes advantage of available resources (individuals, processes, departments, and tools) to complete work efficiently. Uses time effectively and prevents irrelevant issues or distractions from interfering with work completion.
[ + ] Systems Thinking
Consistently evaluates job tasks and processes on how well they help meet team objective(s); identifies non-value-adding components and barriers. Makes appropriate changes to job/role structures and processes by communicating effectively and focusing on new skill development. Uses extensive measurement systems to monitor the implementation.
Technical
[ + ] Computer Aided Design Tools
Ability to manipulate complex computer aided design tools and systems (e.g., computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM), computer aided three dimensional interactive (CATIA), Mentor Graphics, Unigraphics). Able to build and manipulate complex data sets, (e.g., compare CATIA to measurement data, create stereo lithography files).
[ + ] Design / Produce Process
Extensive, specialized knowledge of Boeing design, production, and build processes (e.g., maintenance access solid, dependability cost model, produceability trade offs) to effectively influence product design.
[ + ] Design/Drafting Methods
Extensive, specialized knowledge of design and drafting methods (e.g., orthographic projection, descriptive geometry, layout, geometric dimensioning & tolerancing, coordinate systems, etc.) as applied to manual drafting and/or computer-aided design tools in the creation of drawings and datasets.
