The Technical Processes Manager is responsible for overall print quality and color accuracy and consistency improvement at multiple printing/converting facilities. The scope of this position is comprehensive and wide in terms of identifying improvement opportunities in the extended process, meaning it includes all supporting sub-processes and workflows that impact print quality and color accuracy and consistency. This position works in alignment and coordination with operations and customer expectations in developing improvement activities.
Assess and audit printing facilities and the workforce in terms of process capabilities, equipment capabilities, crew knowledge, skill, and experience levels, and productivity levels as they relate to the extended printing process. This includes press operational practices, procedures, supporting processes (platemaking, various raw materials and sub-processes), and color measurement and control systems
Develop and deliver customized training, based on the assessments, to all stakeholders in the extended printing process (operators, shift supervisors, operations, quality/continuous improvement (CI) resources, and others, as needed and appropriate
Develop a comprehensive testing and certification program for the operational workforce
Write and publish written best practices documentation in alignment with training and educational objectives
Work with raw materials suppliers to troubleshoot issues and continuously improve the printing process capabilities and quality levels
Work in alignment and participate with Graphic Services and operations in support of various print quality improvement strategies and initiatives (G7, Expanded Gamut, internal scorecards, etc.)
Participate in strategic discussions towards ongoing print quality improvement efforts in support of GPI and customer goals, objectives, and expectations
Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Printing Science and/or Graphic Communications
A minimum of 10 years of experience in printing process, color measurement, color management, and process control methodologies
Intimate knowledge of and experience with offset lithography, flexography and rotogravure is desirable.
Knowledge of and experience with various ink systems and materials interactions (fountain solution, etc.). It would be desirable to have experience with various ink and fountain solution testing procedures.
Extensive experience with color measurement systems, colorimetry, and color tolerance
A good, working understanding of the CtP platemaking process and workflow including process control methodologies and curve adjustment strategies and techniques
