Direct and manage R&D laboratories to ensure compliance to regulations, and department’s ability to effectively conduct testing and measurements needed for product testing and scale up. Laboratories include R&D bench-top, pilot, analytical and sensory labs. Create and manage finished product and raw material specification program that include quality control measures needed to ensure food quality and safety at plant level.
Assist in specification related plant test needs such as HACCP plans.
In collaboration with R&D scientists and QA, establishes process for HACCP plans required for plant test runs.
Manages and provides recommendations to R&D leadership regarding R&D laboratory (sensory, bench top, pilot and analytical) capabilities, programs, policies and procedures.
Verifies laboratory data accuracy by maintaining updated and accredited measurement methods, methods validation, equipment calibration, equipment upgrades and training.
Leads the development of new product quality test methods for plant Quality Control (QC) monitoring purposes.
Assists in finding third party analytical services for external product analysis.
Works closely with Sargento Regulatory Compliance to stay abreast of impending new regulatory requirements as they pertain to R&D laboratories and ensures that they are in compliance.
Manages pilot plant GMPs, sanitation and maintenance. Works with R&D and Engineering leadership to evolve pilot lab capabilities.
Manages expenses related to run R&D laboratories.
Designs and implements R&D finished product and raw material specification programs, policies and procedures. Supports scientists in the development of specifications which comply to specification program.
Manages Elkhart Lake Technical Center incoming raw material tracking program to assure tracibility in a recall situation.
Manages Sensory testing program.
Inventing may occur or be required as part of this position:
Supervises 2-4 employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
- Invents or discovers new and useful processes, machines, manufactures, or compositions of matter, or any new and useful improvements thereof for the exclusive use by and ownership of Sargento.
- Assigns all ideas and inventions conceived or developed while employed by Sargento or as a result of employment with Sargento.
- Discloses to Sargento any inventions that are conceived or made.
- Fully assists in making patent applications as well as refraining from disclosing inventions or ideas to others unless requested to do so by Sargento, and assigns any and all rights to Sargento.

This individual must possess a broad knowledge in the area of food quality and safety systems as they pertain to R&D laboratories. Also in product testing for product development and research, particularly as they pertain to defining finished product and raw material specifications. This individual must be proficient in the identification, management, resolution of risk relating to R&D product quality and food laboratory safety, and have an understanding of food policies, procedures and regulations. Experience in both R&D and QA. Experience with and working knowledge of R&D laboratories such as bench top, pilot, analytical and sensory labs and their respective equipment. Bachelor's degree (B. S.) from four-year college or university in Food Science, or related field required. Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in a food industry lab management, product development, R&D and QA roles.
10% Travel required.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals, financial reports, legal documents, technical procedures, and state/government food laboratory regulations. Ability to respond to challenging inquiries from regulatory agencies, R&D Leadership and Division Leadership. Ability to effectively present information to top management and/or public groups.
Ability to apply statistical knowledge to evaluate and interpret R&D statistical tests and instrumentation variability assessment.
Proficiency with Microsoft Suite applications (Word, Excel, Access, Visio, PowerPoint) and statistical software required. Ability to become proficient with Controlled Documentum, Corporate Documentum, and SAP.
Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.,). Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables. Ability to make decisive decisions in an ambiguous environment.
