The Technical Writer works as a resource specialist in writing, cataloging and maintaining of business and technical publications. Creates, writes, edits publications to include reports, manuals, briefs, proposals, procedures, online help, and related materials and conducts interviews with subject experts to understand and present technical materials and parameters of technical content and the presentation of such content. Maintains and retrieves materials. This position reports directly to the Director of Strategic Learning Solutions for general guidance and supervision. Responsibilities include:

Organizes and writes required technical and business material using word processing software per established corporate standards with respect to order, style, terminology, and sequencing.

Reviews publications and recommends revisions or changes in approaches, scope, format, test, methods of production and dissemination. Maintains corporate standards for publications.

Consults with technical team leads and subject matter experts to ensure common understanding of publications and related materials to be produced.

Develops cataloging systems, and maintains records, files, electronic media and archiving of information for publications in a business unit for corporate references.

Selects or recommends use of layouts, graphics, drawings, tables, exhibits, illustrations, charts, or storyboards to amplify or clarify publications objectives.

Periodically audits and reviews publications to determine whether format or content changes/updates are required.

Meets with subject matter experts for concurrence as to content changes.

Remains current on new developments in technical writing, editing, and publishing including technological enhancements which may affect the corporation.

Assists in preparing material for technical seminars and business forums. May be called upon to assist in technical or business presentations in such meetings as business or customer needs require.

We prefer the individual to combine work-from-home with working out of one of the following offices: Winston Salem, NC, Boston, MA, San Francisco, CA, or Chicago, IL.

Required Skills

Competency in word processing, spreadsheets, database management, and graphics production software.

Proficiency in Microsoft Word and MS Suite of Products.

Experience with Imaging Software (Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro) for screen capturing is essential.

Experience with Author-It or a similar document content management system (CMS) technology is required.

Required Experience

Bachelor's Degree in English, Communications, or technical field, plus 3 or more years of writing/editing experience in a professional writing position.

Documentation Project Lead experience preferred.

Software Technical Writing experience.

Online Help experience (context sensitive preferred).

Experience defining documentation structure and design.
